transcript makes 200 monographs available Open Access through Knowledge Unlatched.

All titles in political science free to use by researchers worldwide

Berlin, 23rd October 2017 To mark International Open Access Week, transcript will make 200 titles from its list in political and social sciences available in Open Access through Knowledge Unlatched’s (KU) new service offerings. Starting in 2018 transcript will also make all new publications in political sciences freely available to readers through KU’s crowd funding model. The publisher holds a leading position in the discipline in the German market and is one of the first publishers worldwide to follow demands from the library world to open up its complete lists in order to help foster research.

„For us and many of our authors this is one of the most important trends in scholarly publishing. After previously opening up 400 titles with a very positive resonance, this is the logical next step for us”, says Dr. Karin Werner, transcript’s Managing Director. „We are very pleased that Knowledge Unlatched will support us in maximizing usage for our backlist titles, thanks to its Open Services and furthermore that KU will organize the funding of our front list titles from 2018 onwards.”

„transcript is taking a bold step in opening up a complete discipline of their publishing program“. says Dr. Sven Fund, Managing Director of Knowledge Unlatched. „The publisher is thereby fulfilling a wish from libraries around the world, and we are very happy to support the initiative with KU Open Services.”

While Knowledge Unlatched’s core model of library crowd funding continues to serve as the basis for several open access initiatives, the release of 200 of transcript’s backlist titles will be free of charge to libraries. For around 30 front list titles in political sciences per year which transcript will make available as Open Access, KU will offer a crowd funding package to libraries in the spring of 2018 spanning a three year period. transcript publishes titles in both English and German language.
