As such, this edited book examines the meaning of citizenship in an era defined by monumental global change. Chapters from across both the Global South and North consider emerging formations of citizenship and citizen identities among children and youth in formal and non-formal education contexts, as well as the social and civic imaginaries and practices to which children and youth engage, both in and outside of schools. Rich empirical contributions from an international team of contributors call attention to the social, political, economic, and educational structures shaping the ways young people view citizenship and highlight the social and political agency of children and youth amid increasing issues of polarization, climate change, conflict, migration, extremism, and authoritarianism. The book ultimately identifies emergent forms of citizenship developing in formal and non-formal educational contexts, including those that unsettle the nation-state and democracy. Edited by a team of academics with backgrounds in education, citizenship, and youth studies, this book will appeal to scholars, researchers, and faculty who work across the broader field of youth civic engagement and democracy, as well as international and comparative education and citizenship." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aEducation / Comparative2bisacsh 0aEducation00aCritical Global Citizenship Education 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/1aec6bab-2cd5-4ce2-8cea-63d94c9ed271zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003197nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010900153020001800262024004200280029010800322040002100430700002900451700003200480264003300512300003100545336002600576337002600602338003600628520167000664540001602334588004702350590003402397650004102431650001802472653006102490655002202551758013102573856011902704ae3d2114-998a-4336-a5c3-1508f7100a5aScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xxk o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGlobalisation, Geopolitics, and Gender in Professional CommunicationcLOUISE MULLANY, STEPHANIE SCHNURR. a97810031596748 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031596741 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ae3d2114-998a-4336-a5c3-1508f7100a5a/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aMULLANY, LOUISEeeditor.1 aSCHNURR, STEPHANIEeeditor. 1aEngland :bROUTLEDGE,c2022. a1 online resource (240 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier a"This edited collection investigates the linguistics of globalisation, geopolitics and gender in workplace cultures in a range of different contemporary international settings. The chapters examine how issues of globalisation, gender and geopolitics affect professionals in different workplace contexts, including domestic workers; IT professionals; teachers, university staff; engineers; entrepreneurs; CEOs of different corporates including locally based businesses as well as multinationals; farmers; co-operative leaders; NGO leaders; bloggers; healthcare assistants and caregivers. Taking different sociolinguistic approaches to exploring language and the geopolitics of gender at work in Dubai, Kuwait, Kenya, Uganda, Morocco, Nigeria, Malaysia, Turkey, Belgium, Switzerland, New Zealand, Uganda, the UK and the USA, each chapter focuses on a range of salient geopolitical issues which often have global applicability, but which may also be subject to more localised socio-cultural variation. The chapters critically discuss issues of gendered language, perceptions and representations of workplace cultures, discrimination, the role of gendered stereotyping and deeply ingrained socio-cultural myths about gender and the importance of examining the intersections of identity - all of which continue to persist as barriers to equality and inclusion in workplaces worldwide. Despite the variation and diversity in professions and geopolitical contexts captured across the chapters, remarkably similar issues of gender discrimination and persisting inequalities are identified and critically discussed, thus pointing to the global nature of these issues." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts00aRoutledge Research in Applied Professional Communication 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/ae3d2114-998a-4336-a5c3-1508f7100a5azView this content on BiblioBoard.7002652nam a22003497a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010700153020001800260024004200278029010800320040002100428100003200449264003300481300003100514336002600545337002600571338003600597520123600633540001601869588004701885590003401932650004401966650002002010655002202030758013102052856011902183c79f4bf5-306d-4c6d-a43d-87335452caa4ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xxk o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aMaking Media MatterbCritical Literacy, Popular Culture, and Creative Production /cBENJAMIN THEVENIN. a97810030579258 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810030579251 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/c79f4bf5-306d-4c6d-a43d-87335452caa4/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aTHEVENIN, BENJAMINeauthor. 1aEngland :bROUTLEDGE,c2022. a1 online resource (268 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier a"This book is an essential resource for media educators working to promote critical thinking, creativity, and civic engagement through their teaching. It reviews the historical, sociocultural, and political influences on violence towards children, and sets out future agendas for research and practice to eliminate GBV in sport. The book argues that for GBV to occur and be sustained over time, it must be facilitated by a system that enables this violence, protects the perpetrator, disables bystanders, silences the victims, and/or fails to provide a structure by which to address victims' or bystanders' concerns. Drawing on empirical research from across a range of disciplines, including sport sociology, sport psychology, developmental psychology, and coaching, and examining real life case studies of GBV in sport at all levels, the book makes a powerful case for radical change in our current systems of sport governance, safeguarding, and athlete welfare. This is important reading for any student, researcher, policy-maker, coach, welfare officer or counsellor with an interest in sport, gender studies, safeguarding, criminology, or sociology." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aSports & Recreation / Cultural & Social Aspects2bisacsh 0aSports00aWomenaSport and Physical Activity 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/0a76c4c1-c08c-4e80-8a2a-aeb8aed07bbfzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002852nam a22003497a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450045001530200018001980240042002160290108002580400021003661000026003872640033004133000031004463360026004773370026005033380036005295201446005655400016020115880047020275900034020746500104021086500018022126550022022307580131022528560119023831265b1c9-1dcd-4e5f-a613-ca93edea12f0ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xxk o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDisputed Archival HeritagecJames Lowry. a97810030577658 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810030577651 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/1265b1c9-1dcd-4e5f-a613-ca93edea12f0/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aLowry, Jameseauthor. 1aEngland :bROUTLEDGE,c2022. a1 online resource (356 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier a"Disputed Archival Heritage brings important new perspectives into the discourse on displaced archives. In contrast to shared or joint heritage framings, the book considers the implications of force, violence and loss in the displacement of archival heritage. With chapters from established and emerging scholars in archival studies, Disputed Archival Heritage extends and enriches the conversation that started with the earlier volume, Displaced Archives. Advancing novel theories and methods for understanding disputes and claims over archives, the volume includes chapters that focus on Indigenous records in settler colonial states; literary and community archives; sub-national and private sector displacements; successes in repatriating formerly displaced archives; comparisons with cultural objects seized by colonial powers and the relationship between repatriation and reparations. Analysing key concepts such as joint heritage and provenance, the contributors unsettle Western understandings of records, place and ownership. Disputed Archival Heritage speaks to the growing interest in shared archival heritage, repatriation of cultural artefacts and cultural diasporas. As such, it will be a useful resource for academics, students and practitioners working in the field of archives, records and information management, as well as cultural property and heritage management, peace and conflict studies and international law." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Library & Information Science / Archives & Special Libraries2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/1265b1c9-1dcd-4e5f-a613-ca93edea12f0zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002910nam a22003737a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450119001530200018002720240042002900290108003320400021004401000023004612640049004843000031005333360026005643370026005903380036006164900017006525201411006695400016020805880047020965900040021436500044021836500020022276550022022477580131022698300017024008560119024176e3b0abe-7652-4263-be20-d57d7071ca32ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Post-Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light ProjectionsbWhere Screen Boundaries Lie /cJenna Ng. a97890485525668 ahttps://doi.org/10.5117/97894637235411 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/6e3b0abe-7652-4263-be20-d57d7071ca32/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aNg, Jennaeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bAmsterdam University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (284 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aMediaMatters aScreens are ubiquitous today. Yet contemporary screen media eliminate the presence of the screen and diminish the visibility of its boundaries. As the image becomes indistinguishable from the viewer's surroundings, this unsettling prompts re.examination of how screen boundaries demarcate. Through readings of three media forms - Virtual Reality; holograms; and light projections - this book develops new theories of the surfaces on and spaces in which images are displayed. Interrogating contemporary contestations of reality against illusion, it argues that the disappearance of difference reflects shifted conditions of actuality and virtuality in understanding the human condition. These shifts further connect to the current state of politics by way of their distorted truth values, corrupted terms of information, and internalizations of difference. The Post.Screen Through Virtual Reality, Holograms and Light Projections thus thinks anew the image's borders and delineations, evoking the screen boundary as an instrumentation of today's intense virtualizations which do not tell the truth. In the process, a new imagination for images emerges for a gluttony of the virtual; for new conceptualizations of object and representation, materiality and energies, media and histories, real and unreal; for new understandings of appearances, dis-appearances, replacement and re.placement - the post-screen. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aSocial Science / Media Studies2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aMediaMatters40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/6e3b0abe-7652-4263-be20-d57d7071ca32zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002612nam a22004217a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450133001530200018002860240042003040290108003460400021004547000028004757000032005037000031005352640049005663000031006153360026006463370026006723380036006984900022007345200897007565400016016535880047016695900040017166500042017566500029017986500049018276500020018766550022018967580131019188300022020498560119020713aef3ed3-5b2f-4674-9769-4dd32ad415e2ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Maritime Silk RoadbGlobal Connectivities, Regional Nodes, Localities /cFranck Billé, Sanjyot Mehendale, James W. On the strength of the new data which has emerged in the last two decades in the form of archaeological findings, as well as new techniques such as GIS modeling, the authors collectively demonstrate the existence of a very early global maritime trade. From architecture to cuisine, and language to clothing, evidence points to early connections both within Asia and between Asia and other continents-well before European explorations of the Global South. The human stories presented here offer insights into both the extent and limits of this global exchange, showing how goods and people traveled vast distances, how they were embedded in regional networks, and how local cultures were shaped as a result. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aSocial Science / Archaeology2bisacsh 7aHistory / World2bisacsh 7aHistory / Maritime History & Piracy2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aAsian Borderlands40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/3aef3ed3-5b2f-4674-9769-4dd32ad415e2zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002685nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245012900153020001800282024004300300029010800343040002100451100004000472700002900512700003300541264003600574300003100610336002600641337002600667338003600693490001900729520107800748540001301826588004701839590004001886650003201926650003801958655002201996758013102018830001902149856011902168a24806bc-76a4-4091-9b0e-eb2590d86724ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aRepresenting Poverty and Precarity in a Postcolonial World cBarbara Schmidt-Haberkamp, Marion Gymnich, Klaus P. This volume brings together an international group of scholars who investigate conceptualisations of poverty and precarity from the perspective of literary and cultural studies as well as linguistics. Analysing literature, visual arts and news media from across the postcolonial world, they aim at exploring the frameworks of representation that impact affective and ethical responses to disenfranchised groups and precarious subjects. Case studies focus on intersections between precarity and race, class, and gender, institutional frameworks of publishing, environmental precarity, and the framing of refugees and migrants as precarious subjects. Postcolonialism refers not only to the historical epoch after the end of the colonial era, but also to a theoretical concept for the analysis of power relations. In German-speaking theology, this concept has so far received little attention. In the bilingual volume Postcolonialism, theology and the construction of the other, scholars of all theological disciplines, including religious studies, explore the heuristic possibilities that postcolonialism provides for their subject. In particular, the question is how "the other" is constructed as the counterpart of a "we". In times of global migration and growing right-wing extremism, theology must remain capable to offer answers to the urgent questions of the present. fCC BY-NC0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aReligion / Christian Theology2bisacsh 0aReligion 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a0db6f14-15c2-426c-9924-513d23732fa0zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002971nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245013700153020001800290024004200308029010800350040002100458700002500479700003000504264003200534300002300566336002600589337002600615338003600641490003900677520132900716540001602045588004702061590004002108650005502148650004102203650001802244655002202262758013102284830003902415856011902454d6d303c2-9c49-44cf-af88-051c5cd8f4c4ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDiscourses, Modes, Media and Meaning in an Era of PandemicbA Multimodal Discourse Analysis Approach /cSabine Tan, Marissa K. Using a multimodal discourse analysis approach, this dynamic collection examines various discourses, modes and media in circulation during the early stages of the pandemic, and how these have impacted our daily lives in terms of the various meanings they express. Examples include how national and international news organisations communicate important information about the virus and the crisis, the public's reactions to such communications, the resultant (counter-)discourses as manifested in social media posts and memes, as well as the impact social distancing policies and mobility restrictions have had on people's communication and interaction practices. The book offers a synoptic view of how the pandemic was communicated, represented and (re-)contextualised across different spheres, and ultimately hopes to help account for the significant changes we are continuing to witness in our everyday lives as the pandemic unfolds. This volume will appeal primarily to scholars in the field of (multimodal) discourse analysis. It will also be of interest to researchers and graduate students in other fields whose work focuses on the use of multimodal artefacts for communication and meaning making. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Linguistics2bisacsh 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge Studies in Multimodality40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/d6d303c2-9c49-44cf-af88-051c5cd8f4c4zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002929nam a22004097a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450087001530200018002400240042002580290108003000400021004087000026004297000029004552640032004843000023005163360026005393370026005653380036005914900053006275201293006805400016019735880047019895900040020366500055020766500024021316500024021556500015021796550022021947580131022168300053023478560119024007093a48c-310f-4fd3-b49f-593f602742e9ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBias, Belief, and Conviction in an Age of Fake FactscAnke Finger, Manuela Wagner. a97810008012938 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031879361 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/7093a48c-310f-4fd3-b49f-593f602742e9/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aFinger, Ankeeeditor.1 aWagner, Manuelaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2022. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Research in Cultural and Media Studies aIn this book, authors engage in an interdisciplinary discourse of theory and practice on the concept of personal conviction, addressing the variety of grey zones that mark the concept. Bias, Belief, and Conviction in an Age of Fake Facts discusses where our convictions come from and whether we are aware of them, why they compel us to certain actions, and whether we can change our convictions when presented with opposing evidence, which prove our personal convictions "wrong". Scholars from philosophy, psychology, comparative literature, media studies, applied linguistics, intercultural communication, and education shed light on the topic of personal conviction, crossing disciplinary boundaries and asking questions not only of importance to scholars but also related to the role and possible impact of conviction in the public sphere, education, and in political and cultural discourse. By taking a critical look at personal conviction as an element of inquiry within the humanities and social sciences, this book will contribute substantially to the study of conviction as an aspect of the self we all carry within us and are called upon to examine. It will be of particular interest to scholars in communication and journalism studies, media studies, philosophy, and psychology. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Linguistics2bisacsh 7aPsychology2bisacsh 7aPhilosophy2bisacsh 0aPhilosophy 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge Research in Cultural and Media Studies40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/7093a48c-310f-4fd3-b49f-593f602742e9zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003281nam a22004217a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450125001530200018002780240042002960290108003380400021004461000032004677000035004997000038005342640041005723000031006133360026006443370026006703380036006964900062007325201450007945400016022445880047022605900034023076500030023416500054023716500083024256500017025086550022025257580131025478300062026788560119027405b32e621-4887-4c7a-9556-4f8e9d14d1ecScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aInjustice in Urban SustainabilitybTen Core Drivers /cPanagiota Kotsila, Isabelle Anguelovski, Melissa García-Lamarca. a97810007904058 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810032214251 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/5b32e621-4887-4c7a-9556-4f8e9d14d1ec/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKotsila, Panagiotaeauthor.1 aAnguelovski, Isabelleeauthor.1 aGarcía-Lamarca, Melissaeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bTaylor and Francis,c2022. a1 online resource (170 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Equity, Justice and the Sustainable City series a"
This book uses a unique typology of ten core drivers of injustice to explore and question common assumptions around what urban sustainability means, how it can be implemented, and how it is manifested in or driven by urban interventions that hinge on claims of sustainability.
Aligned with critical environmental justice studies, the book highlights the contradictions of urban sustainability in relation to justice. It argues that urban neighbourhoods cannot be greener, more sustainable and liveable unless their communities are strengthened by the protection of the right to housing, public space, infrastructure and healthy amenities. Linked to the individual drivers, ten short empirical case studies from across Europe and North America provide a systematic analysis of research, policy and practice conducted under urban sustainability agendas in cities such as Barcelona, Glasgow, Athens, Boston and Montréal, and show how social and environmental justice is, or is not, being taken into account. By doing so, the book uncovers the risks of continuing urban sustainability agendas while ignoring, and therefore perpetuating, systemic drivers of inequity and injustice operating within and outside of the city.
Accessibly written for students in urban studies, critical geography and planning, this is a useful and analytical synthesis of issues relating to urban sustainability, environmental and social justice.

However, their initiatives have failed to meet their objectives. The author argues that the reason for this failure is the inability to bring sovereign countries to the table to re-negotiate their debt agreements with private creditors as they fear credit rating agencies and the prospect of a downgrade. The author refers to this as the 'credit rating impasse'.</P> <P>This book proposes a novel solution. The author asserts that there is a need in the literature to unpick the dynamic that exists and creates that impasse, namely the pressures that exist between sovereign states, private creditors, credit rating agencies, and the geo-political backdrop that is massively influential in the dynamic, that is, the adversarial relationship between China and the US.</P> <P>This book addresses the recent history of debt treatment for poorer countries and related successes and failures: COVID-19-related issues and the development of the Debt Service Suspension Initiative and the Common Framework for Debt Treatment. This book examines the reasons for their failure by analysing the positions of the sovereign states, the division between private and official creditors and between multilateral institutions such as the IMF and the World Bank, credit rating agencies, and the competing political entities of China and the US. It presents a wider picture of the systemic underpinnings to such debt-related issues and, when examined through a geo-political perspective, the subsequent chances of future debt treatment-related successes.</P> <P>Licence line: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.</P> <P></P>" fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aBusiness & Economics / International / Economics & Trade2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Corporate Governance2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Finance2bisacsh 0aEconomics 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge International Studies in Money and Banking40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/5cb91d68-286a-4282-beae-13b38b2a63a1zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002715nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501590015302000180031202400420033002901080037204000210048070000290050170000300053026400410056030000310060133600260063233700260065833800360068449000450072052010940076554000130185958800470187259000340191965000450195365000140199865500220201275801310203483000450216585601190221049ea749c-ab51-4802-b16e-9672d2bd9083ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPluricentric Languages and Language EducationbPedagogical Implications and Innovative Approaches to Language Teaching /cMarcus Callies, Stefanie Hehner. a97810008125278 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810032485521 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/49ea749c-ab51-4802-b16e-9672d2bd9083/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCallies, Marcuseeditor.1 aHehner, Stefanieeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bTaylor and Francis,c2022. a1 online resource (241 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Research in Language Education a"<P>This book maps out the pedagogical implications of the global spread and diversification of pluricentric languages for language education and showcases new approaches that can take account of linguistic diversity. </P> <P>Moving the discussion of contemporary norms, aims, and approaches to pluricentric languages in language education beyond English, this book provides a multilingual, comparative perspective through case study examples of Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, and Vietnamese. The period is marked by radical political changes, the formation of national and regional identities, and the rise of modernism in Central Europe - specifically, the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the creation of the new democratic state of Czechoslovakia. Marta Filipová studies the way in which narratives of modern art were formed in a constant negotiation and dialogue between an effort to be international and a desire to remain authentically local.

In times of increasing climate variability, this book calls for alternative ontologies and world-making practices centred on food which encourage agility and adaptability and are shown to be enacted through playful tinkering guided by an ethic of convivial dignity.</P> <P>This innovative book offers a valuable insight into food networks and sustainability which will be useful core reading for courses focusing on critical food studies, food ecology and environmental studies.</P>" fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aSocial Science / Human Geography2bisacsh 7aScience / Earth Sciences / Geography2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Agriculture & Food2bisacsh 0aScience 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aCritical Food Studies40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/dcf5c79b-a30c-49dd-8a4d-f3cf67ab06fdzView this content on BiblioBoard.7003313nam a22003497a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008400153020001800237024004200255029010800297040002100405100002900426264004100455300003100496336002600527337002600553338003600579520192500615540001602540588004702556590003502603650003102638650002202669655002202691758013102713856011902844ec29c537-907a-476e-b0cc-c7f740d964c8ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aReligion and World PoliticsbConnecting Theory with Practice /cErin K. So much political commentary and analysis focuses on these issues. But these are the wrong questions to be asking. Designed for practitioners, policymakers, and newcomers to the topic of religion and global politics, this book emphasises that religion is not something clear, identifiable, and definable, but is fluid and shifting. Consequently, we need analytical frameworks that help us to make sense of this ever-changing phenomenon. The author<I> </I>presents a critical, intersectional framework for analysing religion and applies this to case studies of three core areas of international relations (IR) analysis: (1) conflict, violence, and security; (2) development and humanitarianism; and (3) human rights, law, and public life. These cases highlight how assumptions about what religion is and does affect policymakers, theorists, and activists. The book demonstrates the damage that has been done through policies and programmes based on unquestioned assumptions and the possibilities and insights to be gained by incorporating the critical study of religion into research, policymaking, and practice.</P> <P>This book will be of great interest to students of global politics, IR, religion, and security studies, as well as diplomats, civil servants, policymakers, journalists, and civil society practitioners. These words represent a chain of events which today is disconnected. In the past few years, controversies around meat have arisen around industrialization and globalization of meat production, often pivoting around health, environmental issues, and animal welfare. Although meat increasingly figures as a problem, most consumers' knowledge of animal husbandry and meat production is more absent than ever. Tracing a historical process of alienation along three distinct axes, the authors show how the animal origin of meat is covered up, rationalized, forgotten, excused, neglected, and denied. How is meat produced today, and where? How do we consume meat, and how have our consumption habits changed? Why have these changes occurred, and what are the social and cultural consequences of these changes? Using Norway as a case study, this book examines the dramatic changes in meat production and consumption over the last 150 years. With a wide range of historical sources, together with interviews and observation at farms, slaughterhouses, and production units, as well as analyses of contemporary texts and digital sources, Live, Die, Buy, Eat explores the transformation of animal husbandry, meat production and consumption, together with its cultural consequences. It will appeal to scholars of anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, geography, and history with an interest in food, agriculture, environment, and culture.

Recognising the very real impact of religion on the lives of women and girls, it prioritises experiences and learnings from empirical research and of practitioners, and their activities at grassroots-level, to better understand the nature and root causes of VAWG. Drawing on research done in Christian and Muslim communities in various fragile settings with high religiosity, this book avoids simplistically assigning blame to any one religion, instead engaging with the commonalities of how religion and religious actors influence norms and behaviours that impact VAWG. If the sustainable development goal of ending all forms of VAWG is to be achieved, how should actors in the international development sector engage with religion and religious actors? This book unpacks the nature of religion and religious actors in relation to VAWG, with the aim of giving greater clarity on how to (and how not to) engage with this crucial issue.</P> <P>Combining cutting-edge research with case studies and pragmatic recommendations for academics, policymakers and practitioners, this concise and easily accessible volume helps instigate discussion and engagement with the incredibly important relationships between religion and VAWG.</P>" fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aReligion / Islam2bisacsh 7aReligion / Religious Intolerance, Persecution & Conflict2bisacsh 7aReligion2bisacsh 0aReligion 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aReligion Matters40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/0fd588bf-3b82-4f4e-9d24-18dc953f33fdzView this content on BiblioBoard.7003883nam a22004097a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501350015302000180028802400460030602901080035204000210046010000300048170000300051126400410054130000310058233600260061333700260063933800360066549000560070152021260075754000160288358800470289959000340294665000340298065000710301465000460308565000140313165500220314575801310316783000560329885601190335419ed9efc-c622-4922-b82b-e8a0adf7a05bScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPolitics, Hierarchy, and Public HealthbVoting Patterns in the 2016 US Presidential Election /cDeborah Wallace, Rodrick Wallace. a97810000052648 ahttps://www.doi.org/10.4324/97804292748861 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/19ed9efc-c622-4922-b82b-e8a0adf7a05b/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aWallace, Deboraheauthor.1 aWallace, Rodrickeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bTaylor and Francis,c2019. a1 online resource (154 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge International Studies in Health Economics a"<P>Steep socioeconomic hierarchy in post-industrial Western society threatens public health because of the physiological consequences of material and psychosocial insecurities and deprivations. Following on from their previous books, the authors continue their exploration of the geography of early mortality from age-related chronic conditions, of risk behaviors and their health outcomes, and of infant and child mortality, all due to rigid hierarchy. They divide the 50 states into those that gave their electoral college votes to Trump and those that gave theirs to Clinton in the 2016 presidential election and compare the two sets for socioeconomic and public health profiles. They deliberately apply only simple standard statistical methods in the public health analyses: t-test, Mann-Whitney test, bivariate regression, and backward stepwise multivariate regression. The book assumes familiarity with basic statistics.</P> <P>The authors argue that the unequal power relations that result in eroding public health in the nation and, in particular, in the Trump-voting states, largely cascade from the collapse of American industry, and they analyze the Cold War roots of that collapse. This book, therefore, is intended for researchers within the humanities and social sciences, who want to get a deeper understanding of the practice of such collaborations.</P>" fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aBusiness & Economics / Organizational Development2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Management2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Human Resources & Personnel Management2bisacsh 0aEconomics00abusiness 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/5986a38a-9986-4dfb-baa3-d6404640d6d9zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003450nam a22003737a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500720015302000180022502400470024302901080029004000210039810000300041926400410044930000230049033600260051333700260053933800360056549000150060152020280061654000160264458800470266059000340270765000280274165000200276965500220278975801310281183000150294285601190295745fe3e20-24d7-4467-8452-9152a35e4d22ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSuperdiversitybMigration and Social Complexity /cSteven Vertovec. a97811350494238 ahttps://www.doi.org/ 10.4324/97802035035771 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/45fe3e20-24d7-4467-8452-9152a35e4d22/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aVertovec, Steveneauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bTaylor and Francis,c2022. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aComplexity a"Superdiversity explores processes of diversification and the complex, emergent social configurations that now supersede prior forms of diversity in societies around the world. Migration plays a key role in these processes, bringing changes not just in social, cultural, religious and linguistic phenomena, but also in the ways that these phenomena combine with others like gender, age, and legal status.
The concept of superdiversity has been adopted by scholars across the social sciences in order to address a variety of forms, modes and outcomes of diversification. Central to this field is the relationship between social categorization and social organization, including stratification and inequality. Increasingly complex categories of social ""difference"" have significant impacts across scales, from entire societies to individual identities. While diversification is often met with simplifying stereotypes, threat narratives, and expressions of antagonism, superdiversity encourages a perspective on difference as comprising multiple social processes, flexible collective meanings, and overlapping personal and group identities. A superdiversity approach encourages the re-evaluation and recognition of social categories as multidimensional, unfixed, and porous as opposed to views based on hardened, one-dimensional thinking about groups. Diversification and increasing social complexity are bound to continue, if not intensify, in light of climate change. This will have profound impacts on the nature of global migration, social relations, and inequalities.
Superdiversity presents a convincing case for recognizing new social formations created by changing migration patterns and calls for a re-thinking of public policy and social scientific approaches to social difference. This introduction to the multidisciplinary concept of superdiversity will be of considerable interest to students and researchers in a range of fields in the humanities and social sciences.

The still dominant end-of-pipe paradigm of treatment for surface water discharge, focusing principally on removal of organic matter, has not addressed the well-published problems of pathogen and nutrient release with continued contamination of surface waters. This book incorporates the new paradigm of integrated wastewater management for valorization without surface water discharge using waste stabilization pond systems and wastewater reservoirs. In this paradigm the purpose of treatment is to protect health by reducing pathogens to produce an effluent that is valorized for its fertilizer and water value for agriculture and aquaculture. Methane production as a sustainable energy source is also considered for those applications where it is appropriate. Emphasis is on sustainable engineering solutions for low to medium income cities worldwide. Chapters present the theory of design, followed by design procedures, example design problems, and case study examples with data, diagrams and photos of operating systems. Excel spreadsheets and the FAO program CLIMWAT/CROPWAT are included in examples throughout. Sections on engineering practice include technical training, operation and maintenance requirements, construction and sustainability. The book incorporates design and operating data and case studies from Africa, Australia, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand, and the US, including studies that have been published in French, Portuguese, and Spanish." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist 7aTechnology & Engineering / Mining2bisacsh 7aScience / Applied Sciences2bisacsh 7aScience / Environmental Science2bisacsh 0aScience 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/550d3a89-1f36-4975-8fba-cc881e933ad2zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002283nam a22003857a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450099001530200018002520240047002700290108003170400021004251000035004467000027004812640039005083000031005473360026005783370026006043380036006305200701006665400016013675880047013835900034014306500063014646500048015276500030015756500020016056550022016257580131016478560119017788d712ec5-cfd0-4417-914f-5e53682fe539ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022nyu o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSentient EcologiesbXenophobic Imaginaries of Landscape /cAlexandra Coțofană, Hikmet Kuran. a97818007376628 ahttps://www.doi.org/10.3167/9781800736627 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/8d712ec5-cfd0-4417-914f-5e53682fe539/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCoțofană, Alexandraeauthor.1 aKuran, Hikmeteeditor. 1aNew York :bBerghahn Books,c2022. a1 online resource (276 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aEmploying methodological perspectives from the fields of political geography, environmental studies, anthropology, and their cognate disciplines, this volume explores alternative logics of sentient landscapes as racist, xenophobic, and right-wing. While the field of sentient landscapes has gained critical attention, the literature rarely seems to question the intentionality of sentient landscapes, which are often romanticized as pure, good, and just, and perceived as protectors of those who are powerless, indigenous, and colonized. The book takes a new stance on sentient landscapes with the intention of dispelling the denial of "coevalness" represented by their scholarly romanticization. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022 HSS Frontlist 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Sociology / Rural2bisacsh 7aNature / Animals2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8d712ec5-cfd0-4417-914f-5e53682fe539zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002070nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007400153020001800227024004200245029010800287040002100395700003100416264003200447300003100479336002600510337002600536338003600562490002000598520055900618540001601177588004701193590004001240650004801280650004401328650002001372655002201392758013101414830002001545856011901565099246ac-ab7b-4c95-992e-a582fcf252b7ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aEquality in the CitybImaginaries of the Smart Future /cSusan Flynn. a97817893846598 ahttps://doi.org/10.1386/97817893846421 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/099246ac-ab7b-4c95-992e-a582fcf252b7/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aFlynn, SusancDr.eeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bIntellect,c2022. a1 online resource (288 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aMediated Cities aThis collection critiques the rhetoric of 'smart cities'. Qualitative, quantitative, material, philosophical, and theological analyses draw upon social theory to show how (and why) religion matters deeply in each time and place. The authors and contributors demonstrate that religion is a significant force that drives societies and polities around the world, and that a radical change in the Western understanding of value-driven global politics is needed. Beyond the Death of God offers new, local voices to Western audiences-through essays that suggest the need for an appreciation of Divinity as a quintessence holding a significant place in the hearts, minds, social orders, and political organization of polities around the world. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aPolitical Science / World2bisacsh 7aReligion / Religion, Politics & State2bisacsh 0aReligion 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/78eac5e5-0ae2-4547-a0f9-f3410c53d56czView this content on BiblioBoard.7002734nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008400153020001800237029010800255040002100363700003300384700003000417264004400447300003100491336002600522337002600548338003600574520124600610540001601856588004701872590004001919650006301959650005802022650002002080655002202100758013102122856011902253148657cc-9ea8-4b47-8d74-aaaabccf12efScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAnthropology, Film Industries, ModularitycRamyar D. Larger film industries like Bollywood and Nollywood aim to attain Hollywood's audience and profitability, while smaller, less commercial, and often state-funded enterprises support various cultural and political projects. The contributors to Anthropology, Film Industries, Modularity take an ethnographic and comparative approach to capturing the diversity and growth of global film industries. They outline how modularity-the specialized filmmaking tasks that collectively produce a film-operates as a key feature in every film industry, independent of local context. Whether they are examining the process of dubbing Hollywood films into Hindi, virtual reality filmmaking in South Africa, or on-location shooting in Yemen, the contributors' anthropological methodology brings into relief the universal practices and the local contingencies and deeper cultural realities of film production. For years colonists wrestled ocean waters, desert landscapes, and widespread aridity as they tried to reach inland in their effort of turning outwardly barren lands into a profitable settler colony. In his innovative environmental history, Martin Kalb outlines the development of the colony up to World War I, deconstructing the common settler narrative, all to reveal the importance of natural forces and the Kaisereich's everyday violence. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aNature2bisacsh 7aHistory / Africa / West2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science / Colonialism & Post-colonialism2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aThe Environment in History: International Perspectives40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/2e83ec65-065e-4569-818c-e67aa060ac26zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002881nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245011000153020001800263024004400281029010800325040002100433700002400454700002700478264004200505300003100547336002600578337002600604338003600630520136800666540001602034588004702050590004002097650002302137650005502160650002002215655002202235758013102257856011902388deb161a4-4716-4335-8cf1-cd8ca761db79ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aEducation, Migration and DevelopmentbCritical Perspectives in a Moving World /cAmy North, Elaine Chase. a97813502575598 ahttp://dx.doi.org/10.5040/97813502575731 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/deb161a4-4716-4335-8cf1-cd8ca761db79/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aNorth, Amyeeditor.1 aChase, Elaineeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bBloomsbury Academic,c2022. a1 online resource (337 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis open access book looks critically at how education, migration and development intersect and interact to shape people, communities, societies, ideas, values, and action at local, national and international levels. Written by leading scholars and practitioners based in Belgium, China, Columbia, Ethiopia, India, Lebanon, Mongolia, South Africa, the UK and the USA, the book introduces the reader to how such interactions play out through a series of case study examples drawn from across the globe. It explores education in all its forms and raises critical questions about its purpose and value in different low- and middle-income contexts and settings, in the context of migration. The contributors engage with the multiple reasons why people move, and also consider how people and societies are shaped not just by the movement of humans but also of ideas, concepts and values across different national and international contexts. The chapters cover a range of topics and themes including gender and feminisation, dignity, internal migration, migrant camps, museum pedagogies, migrant teachers and migrant identities. The book decentres dominant theories and ideas emerging in global north scholarship and prioritises empirical studies conducted in relation to low- and middle- income country contexts written by scholars from those contexts where possible. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aEducation2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Emigration & Immigration2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/deb161a4-4716-4335-8cf1-cd8ca761db79zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002780nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008200153020001800235024004400253029010800297040002100405100003500426264004200461300003100503336002600534337002600560338003600586520127700622540001601899588004701915590004001962650005402002650007002056650002002126655002202146758013102168856011902299a2e81034-e17e-43bc-aaf0-dbd616dc6851ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBritish Activist Authors Addressing Children of ColourcKaren Sands-O'Connor. a97813501960498 ahttp://dx.doi.org/10.5040/97813501960631 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a2e81034-e17e-43bc-aaf0-dbd616dc6851/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aSands-O'Connor, Kareneauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bBloomsbury Academic,c2022. a1 online resource (215 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aExploring a history of activists writing for and about children of colour from abolition to Black Lives Matter, this open access book examines issues such as the space given to people of colour by white activists; the voice, agency and intersectionality in activist writing for young people; how writers used activism to expand definitions of Britishness for child readers; and how activism and writing about it has changed in the 21st century. From abolitionists and anti-colonialists such as Amelia Opie, Una Marson and Rabindranath Tagore; communist and feminist activists concerned with broader children's rights including Chris Searle and Rosemary Stones; to Black Panthers and contemporary advocates for people of colour from Farrukh Dhondy to Len Garrison, Catherine Johnson and Corinne Fowler, Karen Sands-O'Connor traces how these activists translated their values for children of colour. Beginning with historical events that sparked activism and the first cultural products for children and continuing to contemporary activism in the wake of the Windrush Scandal, this book analyses the choices, struggles and successes of writers of activist literature as they tried to change Britain and British literature to make it a welcoming place for all child readers. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aSocial Science / Race & Ethnic Relations2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / Children's & Young Adult Literature2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a2e81034-e17e-43bc-aaf0-dbd616dc6851zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003372nam a22003737a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501140015302000180026702400420028502901080032704000210043570000250045670000270048126400320050830000310054033600260057133700260059733800360062352017990065954000160245858800470247459000400252165000710256165000720263265000220270465500220272675801310274885601190287990441542-a9ee-41c7-92e4-6b1ed331c32cScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPopulists and the PandemicbHow Populists Around the World Responded to Covid-19 /cNils Ringe, Lucio Rennó. a97810031976148 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031976141 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/90441542-a9ee-41c7-92e4-6b1ed331c32c/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aRinge, Nilseeditor.1 aRennó, Lucioeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2022. a1 online resource (320 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aPopulists and the Pandemic examines the responses of populist political actors and parties in 22 countries around the globe to the COVID-19 pandemic, in terms of their attitudes, rhetoric, mobilization repertoires, and policy proposals. The responses of some populist leaders have received much public attention, as they denied the severity of the public health crisis, denigrated experts and data, looked for scapegoats, encouraged protests, questioned the legitimacy of liberal institutions, spread false information, and fueled conspiracies. But how widespread are those particular reactions? How much variation is there? What explains the variation that does exist? This volume considers these questions through critical analysis of countries in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa, by leading experts with deep knowledge of their respective cases. Some chapters focus on populist parties, others on charismatic populist leaders. Some countries examined are democracies, others autocracies. Some populists are left wing, others right wing. Some populists are in government, others in opposition. This variation allows for a panoramic consideration of factors that systematically influence or mediate populist responses to the pandemic. The book thus makes a unique contribution to our understanding of the intersection between two of the most pressing social and political challenges of our time. The book will be of interest to all those researching populism, extremism, and political parties and those more broadly interested in political science, public policy, sociology, communications, and economics. The book introduces readers to the origins of the modern research university in the United States, the professionalization of the role of the university teacher, and the rise of alternative conceptions of academic freedom challenging the professional model and radicalizing the image of the university. Leading thinkers on the subject of academic freedom-Arthur Lovejoy, Angela Davis, Alexander Meiklejohn, Edward W. Said, among others-spring to life. What is the relationship between freedom of speech and academic freedom? Should communists be allowed to teach? What constitutes unacceptable political "indoctrination" in the classroom? What are the implications for academic freedom of creating Black Studies and Women's Studies departments? Do academic boycotts, such as those directed against Israel, violate the spirit of academic freedom? The book provides the context for these debates. Instead of opining as a judge, the author discloses the legal, philosophical, political, and semantic disagreements in each controversy. The book will appeal to readers across the social sciences and humanities with interests in scholarly freedom and academic life. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7079 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/5370881b-4030-4075-bdeb-7d59e1f30ed6zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003064nam a22004097a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500760015302000180022902400420024702901080028904000210039770000320041870000280045070000290047826400500050730000310055733600260058833700260061433800360064052013930067654000160206958800470208559000400213259000440217265000460221665000400226265000600230265000200236265500220238275801310240485601190253549520428-6553-4135-a59c-053815cdfc75ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAffective intimaciescMarjo Kolehmainen, Annukka Lahti, Kinneret Lahad. a97815261585748 ahttps://doi.org/10.7765/97815261585741 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/49520428-6553-4135-a59c-053815cdfc75/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKolehmainen, Marjoeeditor.1 aLahti, Annukkaeeditor.1 aLahad, Kinnereteeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bManchester University Press,c2022. a1 online resource (217 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis volume provides a novel platform to re-evaluate the notion of open-ended intimacies through the lens of affect theories. Contributors address the embodied, affective and psychic, sensorial and embodied aspects of their ongoing intimate entanglements across various timely phenomena. This fascinating collection asks how the study of affect enables us to rethink intimacies, what affect theories can do to the prevailing notion of intimacy and how they renew and enrich theories of intimacy in a manner which also considers its normative and violent forms. This collection brings together a selection of original chapters which invite readers to rethink such concepts as care, closeness and connectivity through the notion of affective intimacies. Based on rigorous research, it offers novel insights on a variety of themes from austerity culture to online discussions on regretting motherhood, from anti-ableist notions of health to teletherapies in the era of COVID-19, and from queer intimacies to critiques of empathy. Lively and thought-provoking, this collection contributes to timely topics across the social sciences, representing multiple disciplines from gender studies, sociology and cultural studies to anthropology and queer studies. From Indigenous Pacific peoples who built lives and cosmologies around whales, to Euro-American whalers who descended upon the Pacific during the nineteenth century, and to the new forms of human-cetacean partnerships that have emerged from the late twentieth century, the relationship between these two species has been central to the ocean's history. Across Species and Cultures: Whales, Humans, and Pacific Worlds offers for the first time a critical, wide-ranging geographical and temporal look at the varieties of whale histories in the Pacific. The essay contributors, hailing from around the Pacific, present a wealth of fascinating stories while breaking new methodological ground in environmental history, women's history, animal studies, and Indigenous ontologies. In the process they reveal previously hidden aspects of the story of Pacific whaling, including the contributions of Indigenous people to capitalist whaling, the industry's exceptionally far-reaching spread, and its overlooked second life as a global, industrial slaughter in the twentieth century. While pointing to striking continuities in whaling histories around the Pacific, Across Species and Cultures also reveals deep tensions: between environmentalists and Indigenous peoples, between ideas and realities, and between the North and South Pacific. The book delves in unprecedented ways into the lives and histories of whales themselves. Despite the worst ravages of commercial and industrial whaling, whales survived two centuries of mass killing in the Pacific. Their perseverance continues to nourish many human communities around and in the Pacific Ocean where they are hunted as commodities, regarded as signs of wealth and power, act as providers and protectors, but are also ancestors, providing a bridge between human and nonhuman worlds. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6458 7aHistory / Oceania2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Anthropology2bisacsh 7aNature / Environmental Conservation & Protection2bisacsh 0aNature 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aAsia Pacific Flows40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/86754ca5-614f-4885-a311-6105097bb228zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003591nam a22004097a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501140015302000180026702901080028504000210039370000320041470000300044626400490047630000230052533600260054833700260057433800360060049000230063652019330065954000160259258800470260859000400265559000440269565000310273965000430277065000620281365000110287565500220288675801310290883000230303985601190306261ee7f71-18ae-4308-b882-78945f0e7492ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAcross Species and Cultures (EPUB)bWhales, Humans, and Pacific Worlds /cRyan Tucker Jones, Angela Wanhalla. a97808248921421 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/61ee7f71-18ae-4308-b882-78945f0e7492/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aJones, Ryan Tuckereeditor.1 aWanhalla, Angelaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bUniversity of Hawaii Press,c2022. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aAsia Pacific Flows aMore than any other locale, the Pacific Ocean has been the meeting place between humans and whales. This led to the Western notion that in the Soviet Bloc there was a systematic suppression of the memory of the mass murder of European Jews. Going beyond disputing the mistaken opposition between "communist falsification" of history and the "repressed authentic" interpretation of the Jewish catastrophe, this work presents and analyzes the ways as the Holocaust was conceptualized in the Soviet-ruled parts of Europe. The authors provide various interpretations of the relationship between antifascism and Holocaust memory in the communist countries, arguing that the predominance of an antifascist agenda and the acknowledgment of the Jewish catastrophe were far from mutually exclusive. The interactions included acts of negotiation, cross-referencing, and borrowing. Detailed case studies describe how both individuals and institutions were able to use anti-fascism as a framework to test and widen the boundaries for discussion of the Nazi genocide. The studies build on the new historiography of communism, focusing on everyday life and individual agency, revealing the formation of a great variety of concrete, local memory practices. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6468 7aHistory / Modern / 20th Century2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Jewish Studies2bisacsh 7aHistory / Holocaust2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/060f071d-1aad-4936-ba10-3cec5076c8eazView this content on BiblioBoard.7002848nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010800153020001800261024004200279029010800321040002100429700003500450700004000485250001000525264003200535300002300567336002600590337002600616338003600642520126300678540001601941588004701957590004002004650005402044650007002098650002202168655002202190758013102212856011902343ca088ed7-883f-41c4-9a0a-4b95c07550e1ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aHate Speech and Polarization in Participatory SocietycMarta Pérez-Escolar, José Manuel Noguera-Vivo. a97810004628838 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031098911 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ca088ed7-883f-41c4-9a0a-4b95c07550e1/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aPérez-Escolar, Martaeeditor.1 aNoguera-Vivo, José Manueleeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis timely volume offers a comprehensive and rigorous overview of the role of communication in the construction of hate speech and polarization in the online and offline arena.Delving into the meanings, implications, contexts and effects of extreme speech and gated communities in the media landscape, the chapters analyse misleading metaphors and rhetoric via focused case studies to understand how we can overcome the risks and threats stemming from the past decade's defining communicative phenomena. Examining the means by which particular discourses of progress and hope are circulated globally, it offers unique insights into how LGBTQ livelihoods, relationships, and social movements are legitimated and valued in contemporary society.Adopting an innovative critical discourse-ethnographic approach, Comer draws on scholarship from the sociolinguistics of global mobility, queer linguistics, and digital media studies, offering in-depth analyses of representations of LGBTQ identity across a range of domains. The volume examines semiotic linkages between: LGBTQ tourism marketing; Cape Town, South Africa, as a locus for contemporary ideologies of global mobility and equality; diversity management practices framing LGBTQ equality as a business imperative; and, humanitarian discourses within transnational LGBTQ advocacy. Autoethnographic vignettes and principles from within queer theory are incorporated by Comer's critical discourse-ethnographic approach, giving voice to personal experience in order to sharpen scholarly understanding of the relationships between everyday 'social voices', globalized neoliberal political economy, and the media.Taken together, the volume expansively (if queerly) maps what Comer refers to as 'the mediatization of equality', and will be of interest to graduate students and scholars in critical discourse studies, sociolinguistics, and linguistic anthropology, as well as those working across such fields as media studies, queer studies, and sociology. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Linguistics2bisacsh 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/79fb4dcb-c896-4789-911b-28cd3b39c213zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002847nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500840015302000180023702400420025502901080029704000210040570000270042625000100045326400320046330000230049533600260051833700260054433800360057052013710060654000160197758800470199359000400204065000400208065000360212065000210215665000120217765500220218975801310221185601190234244490023-4ed3-42df-8a12-bf5235098073ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20122022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDictators and AutocratsbSecuring Power across Global Politics /cKlaus Larres. a97810004676048 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031005081 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/44490023-4ed3-42df-8a12-bf5235098073/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aLarres, Klauseeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2012. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aIn order to truly understand the emergence, endurance, and legacy of autocracy, this volume of engaging essays explores how autocratic power is acquired, exercised, and transferred or abruptly ended through the careers and politics of influential figures in more than 20 countries and six regions. The book looks at both traditional "hard" dictators, such as Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, and more modern "soft" or populist autocrats, who are in the process of transforming once fully democratic countries into autocratic states, including Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, Rodrigo Duterte in the Philippines, Narendra Modi in India, and Viktor Orbán in Hungary. The authors touch on a wide range of autocratic and dictatorial figures in the past and present, including present-day autocrats, such as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, military leaders, and democratic leaders with authoritarian aspirations. They analyze the transition of selected autocrats from democratic or benign semi-democratic systems to harsher forms of autocracy, with either quite disastrous or more successful outcomes. An ideal reader for students and scholars, as well as the general public, interested in international affairs, leadership studies, contemporary history and politics, global studies, security studies, economics, psychology, and behavioral studies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aHistory / Africa / Central2bisacsh 7aHistory / Asia / China2bisacsh 7aHistory2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/44490023-4ed3-42df-8a12-bf5235098073zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002547nam a22003617a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450065001530200018002180240042002360290108002780400021003867000027004072500010004342640032004443000023004763360026004993370026005253380036005515201179005875400016017665880047017825900040018296500033018696500011019026550022019137580131019358560119020664f51a1d1-7eae-4448-b7b7-a6058ec4c42aScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAthlete ActivismbContemporary Perspectives /cRory Magrath. a97810005091688 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031402901 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/4f51a1d1-7eae-4448-b7b7-a6058ec4c42a/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aMagrath, Roryeeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis book examines the phenomenon of athlete activism across all levels of sport, from elite and international sport, to collegiate and semi-pro, and asks what this tells us about the relationship between sport and wider society. With contributions from scholars around the world, the book presents a series of fascinating case studies, including the activism of world-famous athletes such as Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe and Raheem Sterling. Covering a broad range of sports, from the National Football League (NFL) and Australian Rules, to fencing and the Olympic Games, the book sheds important light on some of the most important themes in the study of sport, including gender, power, racism, intersectionality and the rise of digital media. It also considers the financial impact on athletes when they take a stand and the psychological impact of activism and how that might relate to sports performance. It has never been the case that 'sport and politics don't mix', and now, more than ever, the opposite is true. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the politics or sociology of sport, the politics of protest, social movements or media studies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aSports & Recreation2bisacsh 0aSports 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/4f51a1d1-7eae-4448-b7b7-a6058ec4c42azView this content on BiblioBoard.7003008nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007600153020001800229024004200247029010800289040002100397700003200418700002800450700002900478264005000507300003100557336002600588337002600614338003600640520139300676540001602069588004702085590004002132650004602172650004002218650006002258650002002318655002202338758013102360856011902491e7e4e9cb-be96-4ea6-95be-c8b0c21c9419ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAffective intimaciescMarjo Kolehmainen, Annukka Lahti, Kinneret Lahad. a97815261585748 ahttps://doi.org/10.7765/97815261585741 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/e7e4e9cb-be96-4ea6-95be-c8b0c21c9419/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKolehmainen, Marjoeeditor.1 aLahti, Annukkaeeditor.1 aLahad, Kinnereteeditor. By so doing, it advances the value of interdisciplinary perspectives and creative methodologies for understanding affective intimacies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aSocial Science / Human Geography2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Sociology / Marriage & Family2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/e7e4e9cb-be96-4ea6-95be-c8b0c21c9419zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002390nam a22004097a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010000153020001800253024004300271029010800314040002100422100002900443264004000472300003100512336002600543337002600569338003600595490002000631520070100651540001601352588004701368590004001415590004401455650006301499650005401562650005201616650002001668655002201688758013101710830002001841856011901861a4405e8e-f24c-43a7-bed0-3c23ec8d22e2ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBecoming Donor-ConceivedbThe Transformation of Anonymity in Gamete Donation /cAmelie Baumann. a97838394573138 ahttps://doi.org/10.14361/97838394573131 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a4405e8e-f24c-43a7-bed0-3c23ec8d22e2/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBaumann, Amelieeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :btranscript Verlag,c2021. a1 online resource (337 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aKörperKulturen aWhile it has been argued that anonymity in gamete donation has been brought to an end by legal changes and technological developments, Amelie Baumann suggests that this is in fact still in transformation. By focusing on the narratives of those who were conceived with anonymously donated gametes in the UK and Germany, she examines this transformative process and the role which donor-conceived persons play in it. This book shows that it is not someone's decision to procreate that turns »being donor-conceived« into a meaningful categorisation. Rather, kinship knowledge gets activated by the donor-conceived in specific ways for »being donor-conceived« to become a powerful identification. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7140 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Disease & Health Issues2bisacsh 7aPhilosophy / Ethics & Moral Philosophy2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aKörperKulturen40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a4405e8e-f24c-43a7-bed0-3c23ec8d22e2zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002954nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007200153020001800225029010800243040002100351100004000372264005700412300002300469336002600492337002600518338003600544490004200580520145400622540001602076588004702092590004002139590004402179650003402223650000902257655002202266758013102288830004202419856011902461a98c94b1-c892-4d54-9ff3-a34981ecde5cScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aArt Activism for an Anticolonial FuturecCarlos Garrido Castellano. a97814384857441 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a98c94b1-c892-4d54-9ff3-a34981ecde5c/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCastellano, Carlos Garridoeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bState University of New York Press,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aSUNY series, Praxis: Theory in Action aAnalyzing the confluence between coloniality and activist art, Art Activism for an Anticolonial Future argues that there is much to gain from approaching contemporary politically committed art practices from the angle of anticolonial, postcolonial, and decolonial struggles. These struggles inspired a vast yet underexplored set of ideas about art and cultural practices and did so decades before the acceptance of radical artistic practices by mainstream art institutions. Carlos Garrido Castellano argues that art activism has been confined to a limited spatial and temporal framework-that of Western culture and the modernist avant-garde. Assumptions about the individual creator and the belated arrival of derivative avant-garde aesthetics to the periphery have generated a narrow view of "political art" at the expense of our capacity to perceive a truly global alternative praxis. Garrido Castellano then illuminates such a praxis, focusing attention on socially engaged art from the Global South, challenging the supposed universality of Western artistic norms, and demonstrating the role of art in promoting and configuring a collective critical consciousness in postcolonial public spheres. Computers are blamed for generating toxic forms of culture and ways of life. Once part of future imaginaries that were optimistic or even utopian, today there is a sense that things have turned out very differently. Anti-computing is widespread. This book seeks to understand its cultural and material logics, its forms, and its operations. Anti-Computing critically investigates forgotten histories of dissent - moments when the imposition of computational technologies, logics, techniques, imaginaries, utopias have been questioned, disputed, or refused. It asks why dissent is forgotten and how - under what circumstances - it revives. Constituting an engagement with media archaeology/medium theory and working through a series of case studies, this book is compelling reading for scholars in digital media, literary, cultural history, digital humanities and associated fields at all levels. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6278 7aComputers2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Industries / Computers & Information Technology2bisacsh 7aComputers / Information Technology2bisacsh 0aComputers 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/43e285ef-2dd3-46c2-abc7-80b584de2556zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002504nam a22003617a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450088001530200018002410290108002590400021003671000031003882640052004193000031004713360026005023370026005283380036005544900045005905200985006355400016016205880047016365900040016836500064017236500038017876550022018257580131018478300045019788560119020231d1be185-f4a8-4f8f-a6df-b14354febf1cScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aMimetic LivesbTolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Character in the Novel /cChloë Kitzinger. a97808101439821 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/1d1be185-f4a8-4f8f-a6df-b14354febf1c/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKitzinger, Chloëeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bNorthwestern University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (256 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aStudies in Russian Literature and Theory aWhat makes some characters seem so real? Mimetic Lives explores this unprecedented question on the rich ground of Tolstoy's and Dostoevsky's fiction. Each author discovered techniques for intensifying the aesthetic illusion Kitzinger calls mimetic life: the reader's sense of a character's embodied existence. Both authors tested the limits of that illusion by pushing it toward the novel's formal and generic bounds. Through new readings of War and Peace, Anna Karenina, The Brothers Karamazov, and other novels, Kitzinger traces the productive tension between these impulses. She shows how these lifelike characters are made, and why the authors' dreams of carrying the illusion of life beyond the novel fail. Kitzinger challenges the contemporary truism that novels educate by providing models for the perspectives of others. The realist novel's power to create compelling fictional persons underscores its resources as a form for thought, and its limits as a source of change. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aLiterary Criticism / Russian & Former Soviet Union2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aStudies in Russian Literature and Theory40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/1d1be185-f4a8-4f8f-a6df-b14354febf1czView this content on BiblioBoard.7002438nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245011300153020001800266024004200284029010800326040002100434100003200455264003200487300003100519336002600550337002600576338003600602490004800638520087800686540001601564588004701580590004001627650004901667650002801716655002201744758013101766830004801897856011901945a8a5bcd1-b47c-4cd4-9ec8-6092f7e6cddeScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aFriendship and TechnologybA Philosophical Approach to Computer-mediated Communication /cTiffany Petricini. a97810320374938 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031888101 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a8a5bcd1-b47c-4cd4-9ec8-6092f7e6cdde/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aPetricini, Tiffanyeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2022. a1 online resource (156 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Research in Communication Studies aThis book explores the nature of technology - participatory media in particular - and its effects on our friendships and our fundamental sense of togetherness. From concepts of individual autonomy, kinship obligations, to ways of expressing mutuality or creativity, moral values exert an unrealized influence, and these often produce more consent than resistance or outrage. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6972 7aSocial Science / Human Services2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Workplace Culture2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aMax Planck Studies in Anthropology and Economy40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/b7a5d2de-c0f3-4738-9ea1-8d2719a3b1c7zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003008nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008400153020001800237029010800255040002100363700003200384700003900416264005000455300002300505336002600528337002600554338003600580520143200616540001602048588004702064590004002111590004402151650003302195650005502228650005202283650001502335655002202350758013102372856011902503ab78c045-3f7d-4a62-919a-45e91d455eb6ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20222022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aLatin American Immigration EthicscAmy Reed-Sandoval, Luis Rubén Díaz Cepeda. a97808165442641 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ab78c045-3f7d-4a62-919a-45e91d455eb6/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aReed-Sandoval, Amyeeditor.1 aDíaz Cepeda, Luis Rubéneeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bUniversity of Arizona Press,c2022. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aFollowing an extended period of near silence on the subject, many social and political philosophers are now treating immigration as a central theme of the discipline. For the first time, this edited volume brings together original works by prominent philosophers writing about immigration ethics from within a Latin American context. Without eschewing relevant conceptual resources derived from European and Anglo-American philosophies, the essays in this book emphasize Latin American and Latinx philosophies, decolonial and feminist theories, and Indigenous philosophies of Latin America, in the pursuit of an immigration ethics. The contributors explore the moral challenges of immigration that either arise within Latin America, or when Latin Americans and Latina/o/xs migrate to and reside within the United States. Uniquely, some chapters focus on south to south migration. Contributors also examine Latina/o/x experiences in the United States, addressing the lacuna of philosophical writing on migration, maternity, and childhood. Latin American Immigration Ethics advances philosophical conversations and debates about immigration by theorizing migration from the Latin American and Latinx context. It is related to the philosophical argument about determinism versus activism and helps to understand the basic conflict of the 21st century between liberal democracy and new authoritarianism. The book looks at Max Weber's typology of political rule and his concept of the ethics of responsibility, which are key to the theory of leadership. The author shows that the unfinished contest between democracy and new authoritarianism in the 21st century confirms the importance of leadership in old and new democracies as well as in the neo-authoritarian regimes and calls for a new type of political leaders. fCC BY0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6508 7aPolitical Science / Political Process / Political Advocacy2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/3b3088b1-a0c8-4c38-9712-f0cdbfd88b15zView this content on BiblioBoard.7001494nam a22003497a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007300153020001800226029010800244040002100352700002900373264004900402300002300451336002600474337002600500338003600526520007900562540001600641588004700657590004000704590004400744650006400788650002000852655002200872758013100894856011901025ff5ec09e-28d3-4f8a-97d0-62cf63796ed9ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBinge-Watching and Contemporary Television ResearchcMareike Jenner. a97814744620131 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ff5ec09e-28d3-4f8a-97d0-62cf63796ed9/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aJenner, Mareikeeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bEdinburgh University Press,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aFocuses on binge-watching and its role in contemporary television studies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6287 7aPerforming Arts / Television / History & Criticism2bisacsh 0aPerforming arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/ff5ec09e-28d3-4f8a-97d0-62cf63796ed9zView this content on BiblioBoard.7001687nam a22003497a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008600153020001800239029010800257040002100365100003000386264004900416300002300465336002600488337002600514338003600540520025400576540001600830588004700846590004000893590004400933650006600977650002201043655002201065758013101087856011901218b7b55987-9c03-4ba5-9451-1891cc8b425cScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBiopolitics After TruthbKnowledge, Power and Democratic Life /cSergei Prozorov. a97814744858141 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/b7b55987-9c03-4ba5-9451-1891cc8b425c/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aProzorov, Sergeieauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bEdinburgh University Press,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aSergei Prozorov contends that the post-truth ideology leads to the degradation of the public sphere that is essential to democratic governance. Using a critical realist lens, it re-imagines academic writings as 21st century open systems that change according to affordances perceived by writers. In so doing, the book offers opportunities for re-imagining how, which and whose knowledge emerges. Academic communication hinges on being able to write in certain forms but not others, which risks excluding knowledge that may lend itself to alternative forms of representation, including dialogues, chronicles, manifestos, blogs and comics. Moreover, because academic ability tends to be misleadingly conflated with writing ability, limiting how the academy writes to a relatively narrow set of forms (such as the essay or thesis), may be preventing a range of abilities from emerging. Standardised forms require abstracts, introductions, main bodies, and conclusions and are also predominantly monolingual and monomodal; this can narrow, distort or flatten epistemic representation and can lead to a range of epistemic losses and gains. Drawing on the history of academia, socio-semiotic research, integrational linguistics, and studies in multimodal and visual thinking, and presenting examples from a range of academic writers including students, the book proposes that academic writings be re-imagined as multimodal artefacts that harness a wider range of epistemic affordances. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7312 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Linguistics2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a30ccda6-93fc-4b34-afb6-244aea52cd7czView this content on BiblioBoard.7002842nam a22004217a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450131001530200018002840240043003020290108003450400021004537000032004747000030005067000031005362640049005673000031006163360026006473370026006733380036006994900055007355201029007905400016018195880047018355900040018825900044019226500029019666500060019956500038020556550022020937580131021158300055022468560119023014d7ffc78-c858-40e0-ac76-90d013ae356bScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAuthorizing Early Modern European WomenbFrom Biography to Biofiction /cJames Fitzmaurice, Naomi J. It also pays attention to the historical women creators themselves, who, be they saints or midwives, visual artists or poets and playwrights, stand out for their roles as active practitioners of their own arts and for their accomplishments as creators. Whether they delivered infants or governed as monarchs, or produced embroideries, letters, paintings or poems, their visions, the authors argue, have endured across the centuries. As the title of the volume suggests, the essays gathered here participate in a wider conversation about the relation between biography, historical fiction, and the growing field of biofiction (that is, contemporary fictionalizations of historical figures), and explore the complicated interconnections between celebrating early modern women and perpetuating popular stereotypes about them. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7258 7aHistory / Women2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / Subjects & Themes / Women2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aGendering the Late Medieval and Early Modern World40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/4d7ffc78-c858-40e0-ac76-90d013ae356bzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002584nam a22004097a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008200153020001800235024004200253029010800295040002100403700003600424700002700460700002900487264004900516300003100565336002600596337002600622338003600648490005600684520091300740540001601653588004701669590004001716650002901756650004901785650001201834655002201846758013101868830005601999856011902055f7a06137-3daa-445d-b1ab-2da26683c2f8ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPiracy in World HistorycStefan Eklöf Amirell, Bruce Buchan, Hans Hägerdal. a97890485449508 ahttps://doi.org/10.5117/97894637292151 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/f7a06137-3daa-445d-b1ab-2da26683c2f8/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aAmirell, Stefan Eklöfeeditor.1 aBuchan, Bruceeeditor.1 aHägerdal, Hanseeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bAmsterdam University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (292 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aMaritime Humanities, 1400-1800: Cultures of the Sea aIn a modern global historical context, scholars have often regarded piracy as an essentially European concept which was inappropriately applied by the expanding European powers to the rest of the world, mainly for the purpose of furthering colonial forms of domination in the economic, political, military, legal and cultural spheres. By contrast, this edited volume highlights the relevance of both European and non-European understandings of piracy to the development of global maritime security and freedom of navigation. It explores the significance of 'legal posturing' on the part of those accused of piracy, as well as the existence of non-European laws and regulations regarding piracy and related forms of maritime violence in the early modern era. The authors in Piracy in World History highlight cases from various parts of the early-modern world, thereby explaining piracy as a global phenomenon. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aHistory / World2bisacsh 7aHistory / Maritime History & Piracy2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aMaritime Humanities, 1400-1800: Cultures of the Sea40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/f7a06137-3daa-445d-b1ab-2da26683c2f8zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002997nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500880015302000180024102901080025904000210036770000360038870000300042426400440045430000310049833600260052933700260055533800360058152014150061754000160203258800470204859000400209559000440213565000630217965000370224265000400227965000200231965500220233975801310236185601190249227c05d46-8fef-448c-8523-f16d74a95a11ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aCocainebFrom Coca Fields to the Streets /cEnrique Desmond Arias, Thomas Grisaffi. a97814780923221 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/27c05d46-8fef-448c-8523-f16d74a95a11/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aArias, Enrique Desmondeeditor.1 aGrisaffi, Thomaseeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bDuke University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (377 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThe contributors to Cocaine analyze the contemporary production, transit, and consumption of cocaine throughout the Americas and the illicit economy's entanglement with local communities. Based on in-depth interviews and archival research, these essays examine how government agents, acting both within and outside the law, and criminal actors seek to manage the flow of illicit drugs to both maintain order and earn profits. Whether discussing the moral economy of coca cultivation in Bolivia, criminal organizations and drug traffickers in Mexico, or the routes cocaine takes as it travels into and through Guatemala, the contributors demonstrate how entire ways of life are built around cocaine commodification. They consider how the authority of state actors is coupled with the self-regulating practices of drug producers, traffickers, and dealers, complicating notions of governance and of the relationships between economic and moral economies. The collection also outlines a more progressive drug policy that acknowledges the important role drugs play in the lives of those at the urban and rural margins. Contributors. Among other topics, the essays examine the dynamics of religious and racial identity among Brazilian Neo-Pentecostals; the significance of cloth coverings in Islamic practice in northern Nigeria; the ethics of socially engaged hip-hop lyrics by Black Muslim artists in Britain; ritual dance performances among Mama Tchamba devotees in Togo; and how Ifá practitioners from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, and the United States join together in a shared spiritual ethnicity. From possession and spirit-induced trembling to dance, the contributors outline how embodied religious practices are central to expressing and shaping interiority and spiritual lives, national and ethnic belonging, ways of knowing and techniques of healing, and sexual and gender politics. In this way, the body is a crucial site of religiously motivated social action for people of African descent. Contributors. Rachel Cantave, Youssef Carter, N. Social Media and Hate argues that these phenomena, and the extreme violence and discrimination they initiate against targeted groups, are connected to the socio-political contexts, values and behaviours of users of social media platforms such as Facebook, TikTok, ShareChat, Instagram and WhatsApp. The argument moves from a theoretical discussion of the practices and consequences of sectarian hatred, through a methodological evaluation of quantitative and qualitative studies on this topic, to four qualitative case studies of social media hate, and its effects on groups, individuals and wider politics in India, Brazil, Myanmar and the UK. The technical, ideological and networked similarities and connections between social media hate against people of African and Asian descent, indigenous communities, Muslims, Dalits, dissenters, feminists, LGBTQIA communities, Rohingya and immigrants across the four contexts is highlighted, stressing the need for an equally systematic political response. This is an insightful text for scholars and academics in the fields of Cultural Studies, Community Psychology, Education, Journalism, Media and Communication Studies, Political Science, Social Anthropology, Social Psychology, and Sociology. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7066 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Journalism2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge Focus on Communication and Society40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/97420aa7-9ac2-491c-9932-1dde2d31bf99zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002839nam a22004097a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500800015302000180023302400420025102901080029304000210040170000290042225000100045126400320046130000230049333600260051633700260054233800360056849000480060452011750065254000160182758800470184359000400189059000440193065000710197465000440204565000200208965500220210975801310213183000480226285601190231067ff0ed9-f2b1-4a67-ad32-18d0f3024c43ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGlobal Perspectives on NGO Communication for Social ChangecGiuliana Sorce. a97810004749548 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97810031886361 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/67ff0ed9-f2b1-4a67-ad32-18d0f3024c43/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aSorce, Giulianaeeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2021. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Research in Communication Studies aThis book examines the central role media and communication play in the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) around the globe, how NGOs communicate with key publics, engage stakeholders, target political actors, enable input from civil society, and create participatory opportunities. An international line-up of authors first discuss communication practices, strategies, and media uses by NGOs, providing insights into the specifics of NGO programs for social change goals and reveal particular sets of tactics NGOs commonly employ. The book then presents a set of case studies of NGO organizing from all over the world-ranging from Sudan via Brazil to China - to illustrate the particular contexts that make NGO advocacy necessary, while also highlighting successful initiatives to illuminate the important spaces NGOs occupy in civil society. This comprehensive and wide-ranging exploration of global NGO communication will be of great interest to scholars across communication studies, media studies, public relations, organizational studies, political science, and development studies, while offering accessible pieces for practitioners and organizers. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7050 7aPolitical Science / NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations)2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Media Studies2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aRoutledge Research in Communication Studies40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/67ff0ed9-f2b1-4a67-ad32-18d0f3024c43zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002794nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245004900153020001800202029010800220040002100328100002700349264004600376300003100422336002600453337002600479338003600505490004800541520125700589540001601846588004701862590004001909650003001949650005601979650003102035650002202066655002202088758013102110830004802241856011902289242c8a25-4f44-41a6-a938-f3654a74c644ScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aIslam, Justice, and DemocracycSabri Ciftci. a97814399215171 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/242c8a25-4f44-41a6-a938-f3654a74c644/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCiftci, Sabrieauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bTemple University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (240 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aReligious Engagement in Democratic Politics aJustice (al-'adl) is one of the principal values of the Islamic faith. In Islam, Justice, and Democracy, Sabri Ciftci explores the historical, philosophical, and empirical foundations of justice to examine how religious values relate to Muslim political preferences and behavior. He focuses on Muslim agency and democracy to explain how ordinary Muslims use the conceptions of divine justice-either servitude to God or exercising free will against oppressors-to make sense of real-world problems. Using ethnographic research, interviews, and public opinion surveys as well as the works of Islamist ideologues, archives of Islamist journals, and other sources, Ciftci shows that building contemporary incarnations of Islamist justice is, in essence, a highly practical political project that has formative effects on Muslim political attitudes. Islam, Justice, and Democracy compares the recent Arab Spring protests to the constitutionalist movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the Middle East to demonstrate the continuities and rifts a century apart. By putting justice at the center of democratic thinking in the Muslim world, Ciftci reconsiders Islam's potential in engendering both democratic ideals and authoritarian preferences. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books 7aReligion / Islam2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science / World / Middle Eastern2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab0080 aReligious Engagement in Democratic Politics40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/242c8a25-4f44-41a6-a938-f3654a74c644zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002991nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245009800153020001800251029010800269040002100377100003700398264004900435300003100484336002600515337002600541338003600567520141400603540001602017588004702033590004002080590004402120650004502164650004202209650005602251650003802307655002202345758013102367856011902498dd777e4d-9ac4-4648-8c47-0fcc4f826c9dScCtBLL20221202064740.0m o d cr u||||||||||221202p20212022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Postcolonial African Genocide NovelbQuests for Meaningfulness /cChigbo Arthur Anyaduba. a97818008573771 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/dd777e4d-9ac4-4648-8c47-0fcc4f826c9d/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aAnyaduba, Chigbo Arthureauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bLiverpool University Press,c2021. a1 online resource (280 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aIn The Postcolonial African Genocide Novel, Chigbo Anyaduba examines fictional responses to mass atrocities occurring in postcolonial Africa. Through a comparative reading of novels responding to the genocides of the Igbo in Nigeria (1966-1970) and the Tutsi in Rwanda (1990-1994), the book underscores the ways that literary encounters with genocides in Africa's postcolonies have attempted to reimagine the conditions giving rise to exterminatory forms of mass violence. The book concretizes and troubles one of the apparent truisms of genocide studies, especially in the context of imaginative literature: that the reality of genocide more often than not resists meaningfulness. Particularly given the centrality of this truism to artistic responses to the Holocaust and to genocides more generally, Anyaduba tracks the astonishing range of meanings drawn by writers at a series of (temporal, spatial, historical, cultural and other) removes from the realities of genocide in Africa's postcolonies, a set of meanings that are often highly‐specific and irreducible to maxims or foundational cases. The book shows that in the artistic projects to construct meanings against genocide's nihilism writers of African genocides deploy tropes that while significantly oriented to African concerns are equally shaped by the representational conventions and practices associated with the legacies of the Holocaust. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6480 7aHistory / Modern / 20th Century2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / African2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / Modern / 20th Century2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Frontlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/d138fa64-4e33-4543-9d55-70bb763ab00840uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/dd777e4d-9ac4-4648-8c47-0fcc4f826c9dzView this content on BiblioBoard.70
