In the same time frame the political sphere in Europe, and in particular within the European Union, has also been undergoing major transformations. Dealing with environmental issues over more than fifty years in a historical perspective enables us to gain a better understanding of these transformations, notably the emergence of a European public sphere and how this is changing decision-making processes. Drawing on recent research results from various disciplines, including history, sociology, law and political sciences, this volume addresses the methodological challenge of a European perspective on a transnational subject - one that is commonly distorted by a national prism. It shows how perceptions of the environment are increasingly converging and how these convergences of views across political or linguistic borders in the long run exert an undeniable influence not only on political debates but also on political decisions across Europe. Revealing European characteristics of perceptions, debates and policies, this volume contributes to a history of Europeanisation beyond the usual political turning points and limits." fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aHistory / Europe2bisacsh 7aNature / Environmental Conservation & Protection2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Regional Studies2bisacsh 0aNature00aenvironmentapublic sphereaEurope 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a3806680-3dde-4f12-9913-0a538e670a12zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003313nam a22003377a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010200153020001800255029010800273040002100381100003700402264005200439300003100491336002600522337002600548338003600574520191700610540001602527588004702543590003902590650005502629650002002684655002202704758013002726856011902856eb2a1e73-d110-47db-9c6b-429e7ede3209ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20232023xxk o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDisability and the PosthumanbBodies, Technology, and Cultural Futures /cStuart Fletcher Murray. a97817896274731 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/eb2a1e73-d110-47db-9c6b-429e7ede3209/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aMurray, Stuart Fletchereauthor. 1aLiverpool :bLiverpool University Press,c2023. a1 online resource (270 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis volume contributes to the vibrant, ongoing recuperative work on women's writing by shedding new light on a group of authors commonly dismissed as middlebrow in their concerns and conservative in their styles and politics. The neologism 'interfeminism' - coined to partner Kristin Bluemel's 'intermodernism' - locates this group chronologically and ideologically between two 'waves' of feminism, whilst also forging connections between the political and cultural monoliths that have traditionally overshadowed them. Drawing attention to the strengths of this 'out-of-category' writing in its own right, this volume also highlights how intersecting discourses of gender, class and society in the interwar and postwar periods pave the way for the bold reassessments of female subjectivity that characterise second and third wave feminism. The essays showcase the stylistic, cultural and political vitality of a substantial group of women authors of fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry and journalism including Vera Brittain, Storm Jameson, Nancy Mitford, Phyllis Shand Allfrey, Rumer Godden, Attia Hosain, Doris Lessing, Kamala Markandaya, Susan Ertz, Marghanita Laski, Elizabeth Bowen, Edith Pargeter, Eileen Bigland, Nancy Spain, Vera Laughton Matthews, Pamela Hansford Johnson, Dorothy Whipple, Elizabeth Taylor, Daphne du Maurier, Barbara Comyns, Shelagh Delaney, Stevie Smith and Penelope Mortimer. Additional exploration of the popular magazines Woman's Weekly and Good Housekeeping and new material from the Vera Brittain archive add an innovative dimension to original readings of the literature of a transformative period of British social and cultural history. For the most part, animation has been excluded from the purview of film theory. The contributors to this collection consider the reasons for this marginalization while also bringing attention to key historical contributions across a wide range of animation practices, geographic and linguistic terrains, and historical periods. They delve deep into questions of how animation might best be understood, as well as how it relates to concepts such as the still, the moving image, the frame, animism, and utopia. The contributors take on the kinds of theoretical questions that have remained underexplored because, as Karen Beckman argues, scholars of cinema and media studies have allowed themselves to be constrained by too narrow a sense of what cinema is. This collection reanimates and expands film studies by taking the concept of animation seriously. Contributors. This collection of essays challenges the view that local powers were straightforwardly subjugated to the expanding central power of the monarchy. Rather than interpret countervailing events as mere 'delays' in this inevitable process, the contributors to this book interrogate where these events came from, which causes can be uncovered and how much influence individual actors had in this process. What emerges is a story of contested interests seeking cooperation through institutions and social practices that were flexible enough to stabilise a system that was hierarchical yet mutually beneficial for multiple social groups. By examining the Visigothic settlement, the interplay between central and local power, the use of ethnic identity, projections of authority, and the role of the Church, this book articulates a model for understanding the formation of a large and important early medieval kingdom. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7471 7aHistory / Europe / Medieval2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science / History & Theory2bisacsh 7aHistory / Europe / Spain & Portugal2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aLate Antique and Early Medieval Iberia40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/55b1e4e5-4b2a-4821-aa66-560466744dddzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002089nam a22003497a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450041001530200017001940240046002110290108002570400021003651000032003862640094004183000031005123360026005433370026005693380036005955200699006315400016013305880047013465900033013936500030014266500012014566550022014687580130014908560119016205bdd569b-e9c5-4b3f-8194-2bb7072a7c0cScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152023xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBarbarian EuropecKarol Modzelewski. a9783653041278 ahttps://doi.org/10.3726/978-3-653-04127-91 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/5bdd569b-e9c5-4b3f-8194-2bb7072a7c0c/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aModzelewski, Karoleauthor. 1aFrankfurt am Main, Berlin, Bern, Bruxelles, New York, Oxford, Wien, :bPeter Lang,c2015. a1 online resource (416 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aEuropean culture has been greatly influenced by the Christian Church and Greek and Roman culture. However, the peoples of Europe's remote past, whom the Greeks, Romans, and their medieval heirs called the «barbarians», also left their mark. Closely examining ancient and medieval narratives and the codifications of laws, this thoughtfully conducted comparative study sheds light on the illiterate societies of the early Germanic and Slavic peoples. The picture that emerges is one of communities built on kinship, neighborly, and tribal relations, where decision making, judgement, and punishment were carried out collectively, and the distinction between the sacred and profane was unknown. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist 7aHistory / Europe2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/5bdd569b-e9c5-4b3f-8194-2bb7072a7c0czView this content on BiblioBoard.7002895nam a22003737a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501240015302000180027702400350029502901080033004000210043810000280045926400740048730000310056133600260059233700260061833800360064449000310068052013500071154000160206158800470207759000330212465000420215765000200219965500220221975801300224183000310237185601190240218c52372-c2da-45f3-bfe0-d62daa223b73ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182023xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard02aA History of the American Civil Rights Movement Through Newspaper CoveragebThe Race Agenda, Volume 1 /cSteve Hallock. a97814331469478 ahttps://doi.org/10.3726/b138351 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/18c52372-c2da-45f3-bfe0-d62daa223b73/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aHallock, Steveeauthor. 1aNew York, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Oxford, Wien :bPeter Lang,c2018. a1 online resource (374 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aMediating American History aFrom the cardinal Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court ruling that desegregated U.S. public education to the demonstrations, marches, and violence of the civil rights movement, A History of the American Civil Rights Movement Through Newspaper Coverage: The Race Agenda, Volume 1 traces the crusade for justice through the lens of major newspaper coverage to reveal the combating sectional press attitudes of the era. The book details attempts, blatant and subtle, to frame the major events of the movement in themes that have resonated from before, during, and since the Civil War. States' rights versus constitutional guarantees of freedom and equality, nullification versus federal authority, and regional social and cultural mores that buttressed the prejudices and political arguments of segregation and desegregation across the nation are some of the issues covered. This analysis of the press coverage of events and issues of that tumultuous period of U.S. history-by newspapers in the North, South, Midwest, and West-exposes perspectives and press routines that remain ingrained and thus relevant today, when journalistic treatment of political debate, ranging from traditional newspapers and broadcast platforms to those of cable, social media, and the Internet, continues to set an often volatile and oppositional political agenda. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist 7aPerforming Arts / Television2bisacsh 0aPerforming arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aMediating American History40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/18c52372-c2da-45f3-bfe0-d62daa223b73zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002842nam a22003737a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450050001530200018002030240035002210290108002560400021003641000028003852640074004133000031004873360026005183370026005443380036005704900042006065201323006485400016019715880047019875900033020346500074020676500014021416550022021557580130021778300042023078560119023498e649f17-463f-4e00-a0bb-553ac2dd330fScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192023xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAnti-Islamophobic CurriculumscRahat Zaidi . a97814331425508 ahttps://doi.org/10.3726/b110661 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/8e649f17-463f-4e00-a0bb-553ac2dd330f/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aZaidi , Rahateauthor. 1aNew York, Bern, Berlin, Bruxelles, Oxford, Wien :bPeter Lang,c2019. a1 online resource (151 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aCritical Praxis and Curriculum Guides aSince patterns of immigration began taking hold, one of the primary goals of any immigrant to, or citizen of, North America has been to be accepted and to adapt to a new culture and learn to live a productive and healthy life. There are many different means by which people endeavor to accomplish this. One of these is through education, a platform that has been, and should continue to be, a principal path to achieving this goal. The field of education has also become one of the primary forums for provoking and questioning societal norms and is a powerful means towards achieving the vision of a multicultural society capable of living, working, and playing in harmony. Anti-Islamophobic Curriculums presents a specific curriculum to help teachers and young learners gain more awareness of cultures much different from theirs. Anti-Islamophobic Curriculums also endeavours to decrease sociophobic reaction toward cultures that are unfamiliar and to acquaint learners with a curriculum beyond what has traditionally been their predominant English/French/Indigenous experience. Designs of Blackness provides less a narrative literary history than, precisely, a series of mappings-each literary-critical and comparative while at the same time offering cultural and historical context. This carefully re-edited version of the 1998 publication opens with an estimation of earliest African American voice in the names of Phillis Wheatley and her contemporaries. It then takes up the huge span of autobiography from Frederick Douglass through to Maya Angelou. "Harlem on My Mind," which follows, sets out the literary contours of America's premier black city. Womanism, Alice Walker's presiding term, is given full due in an analysis of fiction from Harriet E. Wilson to Toni Morrison. Richard Wright is approached not as some regulation "realist" but as a more inward, at times near-surreal, author. Decadology has its risks but the 1940s has rarely been approached as a unique era of war and peace and especially in African American texts. Beat Generation work usually adheres to Ginsberg and Kerouac, but black Beat writing invites its own chapter in the names of Amiri Baraka, Ted Joans and Bob Kaufman. The 1960s has long become a mythic change-decade, and in few greater respects than as a black theatre both of the stage and politics. In Leon Forrest African America had a figure of the postmodern turn: his work is explored in its own right and for how it takes its place in the context of other reflexive black fiction. "African American Fictions of Passing" unpacks the whole deceptive trope of "race" in writing from Williams Wells Brown through to Charles Johnson. The two newly added chapters pursue African American literary achievement into the Obama-Trump century, fiction from Octavia Butler to Darryl Pinkney, poetry from Rita Dove to Kevin Young. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist 7aLiterary Criticism / African2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / European / French2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / European2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/2e8db367-6156-43a5-bf82-2b7746a239afzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002505nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500910015302000180024402400350026202901080029704000210040510000290042626400840045530000310053933600260057033700260059633800360062249000440065852008810070254000160158358800470159959000330164665000210167965000120170065300920171265500220180475801300182683000440195685601190200027d442b5-9e3b-4777-ad03-f3f7cf54795bScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182023xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGenocidal EmpiresbGerman Colonialism in Africa and the Third Reich /cKlaus Bachmann. a97836317527848 ahttps://doi.org/10.3726/b138341 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/27d442b5-9e3b-4777-ad03-f3f7cf54795b/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBachmann, Klauseauthor. 1aBerlin, Bern, Bruxelles, New York, Oxford, Warszawa, Wien :bPeter Lang,c2018. a1 online resource (386 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aStudies in History, Memory and Politics aBetween 1904 and 1907, German soldiers, settlers and mercenaries committed mass murder in Africa. Can this be considered the first genocide of the 20th century? Was it a forecast of the Third Reich's extermination policy in Central and Eastern Europe? This book provides the answer. Based on extensive archival and library research in Tanzania, Namibia, South Africa, Germany and Poland as well as on the most recent and up-to-date jurisprudence of international criminal tribunals, the renowned historian and political scientist Klaus Bachmann paints a new and surprising picture of the events and their legal significance, which many will find disturbing and provocative. It abolishes many well-established interpretations about German colonialism and its alleged links with the Third Reich and provides a new and intriguing contribution to the current post-colonial debate. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist 7aHistory2bisacsh 0aHistory00aInternational LawaTansaniaaNational SocialismaNamibiaaForeign policyaGerman Empire 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aStudies in History, Memory and Politics40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/27d442b5-9e3b-4777-ad03-f3f7cf54795bzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002763nam a22004217a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450109001530200018002620240043002800290108003230400021004311000029004527000030004817000029005112640036005403000031005763360026006073370026006333380036006594900023006955201106007185400013018245880047018375900039018846500045019236500021019686500046019896500012020356550022020477580130020698300023021998560119022221cc539d5-9786-404e-b6e0-d7eabf7641f2ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20162022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSmall Nations and Colonial Peripheries in World War I cGearóid Barry, Enrico Dal Lago, Róisín Healy. a97890043100188 ahttps://doi.org/10.1163/9789004310018 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/1cc539d5-9786-404e-b6e0-d7eabf7641f2/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBarry, Gearóideauthor.1 aLago, Enrico Daleeditor.1 aHealy, Róisíneeditor. 1aLeiden; Boston :bBrill,c2016. a1 online resource (317 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aHistory of Warfare a"This edited volume examines the experience of World War I of small nations, defined here in terms of their relative weakness vis-à-vis the major actors in European diplomacy, and colonial peripheries, encompassing areas that were subject to colonial rule by European empires and thus located far from the heartland of these empires. The chapters address subject nations within Europe, such as Ireland and Poland; neutral states, such as Sweden and Spain; and overseas colonies like Tunisia, Algeria and German East Africa. By combining analyses of both European and extra-European experiences of war, this collection of essays provides a unique comparative perspective on World War I and points the way towards an integrated history of small nations and colonial peripheries. Laurel Weldon weaves together skillfully the theoretical strands of gender equality policy, intersectionality, social movements, and representation in a multimethod/level comparative study that unequivocally places women's movements at the center of our understanding of democracy and social change." ---Amy G. Mazur, Washington State University "Laurel Weldon's When Protest Makes Policy expands and enriches our understanding of representation by stressing social movements as a primary avenue for the representation of marginalized groups. With powerful theory backed by persuasive analysis, it is a must-read for anyone interested in democracy and the representation of marginalized groups." ---Pamela Paxton, University of Texas at Austin "This is a bold and exciting book. There are many fine scholars who look at women's movements, political theorists who make claims about democracy, and policy analysts who do longitudinal treatments or cross-sectional evaluations of various policies. I know of no one, aside from Weldon, who is comfortable with all three of these roles." ---David Meyer, University of California, Irvine What role do social movements play in a democracy? Political theorist S. Laurel Weldon demonstrates that social movements provide a hitherto unrecognized form of democratic representation, and thus offer a significant potential for deepening democracy and overcoming social conflict. Through a series of case studies of movements conducted by women, women of color, and workers in the United States and other member nations of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Weldon examines processes of representation at the local, state, and national levels. She concludes that, for systematically disadvantaged groups, social movements can be as important---sometimes more important---for the effective articulation of a group perspective as political parties, interest groups, or the physical presence of group members in legislatures. When Protest Makes Policy contributes to the emerging scholarship on civil society as well as the traditional scholarship on representation. It will be of interest to anyone concerned with advancing social cohesion and deepening democracy and inclusion as well as those concerned with advancing equality for women, ethnic and racial minorities, the working class, and poor people. Absolutely new in content and significantly innovative in methodology and argument, Stumbling Blocks Before the Blind offers a cultural geography of medieval blindness that invites us to be more discriminating about how we think of geographies of disability today." ---Christopher Baswell, Columbia University "A challenging, interesting, and timely book that is also very well written . . . Wheatley has researched and brought together a leitmotiv that I never would have guessed was so pervasive, so intriguing, so worthy of a book." ---Jody Enders, University of California, Santa Barbara Stumbling Blocks Before the Blind presents the first comprehensive exploration of a disability in the Middle Ages, drawing on the literature, history, art history, and religious discourse of England and France. It relates current theories of disability to the cultural and institutional constructions of blindness in the eleventh through fifteenth centuries, examining the surprising differences in the treatment of blind people and the responses to blindness in these two countries. The book shows that pernicious attitudes about blindness were partially offset by innovations and ameliorations---social; literary; and, to an extent, medical---that began to foster a fuller understanding and acceptance of blindness. A number of practices and institutions in France, both positive and negative---blinding as punishment, the foundation of hospices for the blind, and some medical treatment---resulted in not only attitudes that commodified human sight but also inhumane satire against the blind in French literature, both secular and religious. Anglo-Saxon and later medieval England differed markedly in all three of these areas, and the less prominent position of blind people in society resulted in noticeably fewer cruel representations in literature. This book will interest students of literature, history, art history, and religion because it will provide clear contexts for considering any medieval artifact relating to blindness---a literary text, a historical document, a theological treatise, or a work of art. For some readers, the book will serve as an introduction to the field of disability studies, an area of increasing interest both within and outside of the academy. By now, already a decade has passed since our conference section took place and it is due to various circumstances that this volume has not been published earlier. It carries along, in some sense, its own migration trace. Nevertheless, the questions examined in the contributions have reached even more relevance since then in both, the Old World and the New, due to the various political, social, economic and ecological crisis around the globe that have led to the increased arrival of refugees to Europe and the harsh discussion about a concrete or "intelligent" wall to shield the USA from Latin American migrants, among others. Today, there is an urgent political and social need for concepts of living together in much more heterogeneous and much less familiar societies. The questions, notions and cases explored in the nine contributions that comprise this publication focus on this emergency. fCC BY-SA0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aPassagen - Passages40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/491a33bf-7a45-4d03-ae81-46d957faada6zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002541nam a22003617a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450082001530200018002350290108002530400021003611000029003822640044004113000031004553360026004863370026005123380036005385201054005745400016016285880047016445900039016916500063017306500055017936500040018486500020018886550022019087580130019308560119020608af092a3-3162-4906-8c53-db7a553233f9ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20162022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aEncoding Race, Encoding ClassbIndian IT Workers in Berlin /cSareeta Amrute. a97814780918751 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/8af092a3-3162-4906-8c53-db7a553233f9/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aAmrute, Sareetaeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bDuke University Press,c2016. a1 online resource (281 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aIn Encoding Race, Encoding Class Sareeta Amrute explores the work and private lives of highly skilled Indian IT coders in Berlin to reveal the oft-obscured realities of the embodied, raced, and classed nature of cognitive labor. In addition to conducting fieldwork and interviews in IT offices as well as analyzing political cartoons, advertisements, and reports on white-collar work, Amrute spent time with a core of twenty programmers before, during, and after their shifts. She shows how they occupy a contradictory position, as they are racialized in Germany as temporary and migrant grunt workers, yet their middle-class aspirations reflect efforts to build a new, global, and economically dominant India. The ways they accept and resist the premises and conditions of their work offer new potentials for alternative visions of living and working in neoliberal economies. Demonstrating how these coders' cognitive labor realigns and reimagines race and class, Amrute conceptualizes personhood and migration within global capitalism in new ways. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Emigration & Immigration2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8af092a3-3162-4906-8c53-db7a553233f9zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002360nam a22003977a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450070001530200018002230240043002410290108002840400021003921000037004137000032004502640036004823000031005183360026005493370026005753380036006014900038006375200796006755400013014715880047014845900039015316500048015706500022016186500013016406550022016537580130016758300038018058560119018435b0ada50-1b12-46e7-9a52-ceed712d0ffcScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aScorsese and ReligioncChristopher B. Not only will this volume explore the foundation of Scorsese's interest in religion-namely, his relation to the Catholic Church-but it will also highlight the religious breadth of Scorsese's corpus. Ultimately, this book demonstrates that Scorsese's cinematic "re-presentation" of reality brings together various religious influences (Catholicism, existentialism, Buddhism, etc.) and topics such as violence, morality, nihilism, and so on. The overarching claim is that Scorsese, who indeed once claimed that his "whole life" had been "movies and religion," cannot be properly understood without reflecting on the ways in which his religious interests are expressed in and through his art. fCC BY-NC0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aReligion / Christianity / Catholic2bisacsh 7aReligion2bisacsh 0aReligion 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aStudies in Religion and the Arts 40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/5b0ada50-1b12-46e7-9a52-ceed712d0ffczView this content on BiblioBoard.7002337nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245011400153020001800267024004300285029010800328040002100436100002900457264003600486300003100522336002600553337002600579338003600605490004000641520081200681540001301493588004701506590003901553650004001592650002001632655002201652758013001674830004001804856011901844b8571d4b-becf-4fdd-babd-768166d3d00aScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aRemaking Gender and the FamilybPerspectives on Contemporary Chinese-language Film Remakes /cSarah Woodland. a97890043633048 ahttps://doi.org/10.1163/9789004363304 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/b8571d4b-becf-4fdd-babd-768166d3d00a/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aWoodland, Saraheauthor. 1aLeiden; Boston :bBrill,c2018. a1 online resource (167 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aWomen and Gender in China Studies aIn Remaking Gender and the Family, Sarah Woodland examines the complexities of Chinese-language cinematic remakes. With a particular focus on how changes in representations of gender and the family between two versions of the same film connect with perceived socio-cultural, political and cinematic values within Chinese society, Woodland explores how source texts are reshaped for their new audiences. In this book, she conducts a comparative analysis of two pairs of intercultural and two pairs of intracultural films, each chapter highlighting a different dimension of remakes, and illustrating how changes in gender representations can highlight not just differences in attitudes towards gender across cultures, but also broader concerns relating to culture, genre, auteurism, politics and temporality. fCC BY-NC0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aWomen and Gender in China Studies 40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/b8571d4b-becf-4fdd-babd-768166d3d00azView this content on BiblioBoard.7002509nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008700153020001800240024004300258029010800301040002100409100002900430264003600459300003100495336002600526337002600552338003600578490003100614520102200645540001301667588004701680590003901727650005201766650001501818655002201833758013001855830003101985856011902016a4f0523d-9d15-481b-85b7-9ce0d134d9fbScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPacifism, Politics, and FeminismbIntersections and Innovations /cJennifer Kling. a97890043967228 ahttps://doi.org/10.1163/9789004396722 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a4f0523d-9d15-481b-85b7-9ce0d134d9fb/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKling, Jennifereauthor. 1aLeiden; Boston :bBrill,c2019. a1 online resource (176 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aValue Inquiry Book Series a"Pacifism, Politics, and Feminism: Intersections and Innovations discusses a) how feminist analyses allow for and encourage the re-conceptualization of concepts and ideas once thought familiar from traditional ethical and political philosophy, and b) traditional political topics and issues through pacifist and feminist lenses. Lorenz. This is the first book to trace Nazi characters through the German and Austrian literature. Until the defeat of the Third Reich, pro-Nazi literature was widely distributed. However, after the war, Nazi publications were suppressed or even banned, and new writers began to dominate the market alongside exile and resistance authors. The fact that Nazi figures remained consistent suggests that, rather than representing real people, they functioned as ideological signifiers. Recent literature and films set in the Nazi era show that "the Nazis", ambiguous characters with a sinister appeal, live on as an established trope in the cultural imagination. fCC BY-NC0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aHistory / Europe2bisacsh 7aHistory / Holocaust2bisacsh 7aHistory / Social History2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aStudia Imagologica40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/c7e6fc24-d876-44a5-9cbf-caf8aca0946czView this content on BiblioBoard.7002554nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245013300153020001800286024004300304029010800347040002100455100003300476264003600509300003100545336002600576337002600602338003600628490002600664520103300690540001301723588004701736590003901783650004901822650001201871655002201883758013001905830002602035856011902061cca1b286-9a30-4b8e-840f-0c1d183fd1bcScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aMigrating Words, Migrating Merchants, Migrating LawbTrading Routes and the Development of Commercial Law /cStefania Gialdroni. a97890044166428 ahttps://doi.org/10.1163/9789004416642 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/cca1b286-9a30-4b8e-840f-0c1d183fd1bc/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aGialdroni, Stefaniaeauthor. 1aLeiden; Boston :bBrill,c2019. a1 online resource (336 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aLegal History Library a"Migrating Words, Migrating Merchants, Migrating Law examines the connections that existed between merchants' journeys, the languages they used and the development of commercial law in the context of late medieval and early modern trade. The essays explore how legal language expresses and advances power relations, along with the ways in which the language of law legitimates power. The wide geographical and chronological scope showcases how power, legitimacy and language interact, moving the discussion beyond traditional issues of identity or the formation of nation-states and their institutions. What emerges are different strategies reflective of the diverse and pluralistic political, legal, and cultural worlds of the Middle Ages. Contributors are Michael H. It charts past and present environmental change in different African settings and also discusses policies and scenarios for the future. The first section, "Ideas", enquires into local perceptions of the environment, followed by contributions on historical cases of environmental change and state regulation. The section "Present" addresses decision-making and agenda-setting processes related to current representations and/or predicted effects of climate change. The section "Prospects" is concerned with contemporary African megatrends. The authors move across different scales of investigation, from locally-grounded ethnographic analyses to discussions on continental trends and international policy. At the threshold of the Anthropocene, how might humans artistically envision their place in the world? Do humans possess cultural tools, which will allow us to imagine new possibilities and relationships with the natural environment at a time when our material surroundings are under siege? Exploring Nature's Texture looks at the imaginative possibilities of using the visual arts to address the breakdown of the human relationship with the environment. Bringing together contributions from artists, theologians, anthropologists and philosophers, it investigates the arts as a bridge between culture and nature, as well as between the human and more-than-human world. The book highlights the gender differences in recorded criminality and the way that they were shaped by the local context. Women played a prominent role in recorded crime in this period, and could even make up half of all defendants in specific European cities. At the same time, there were also large regional differences. Women's crime patterns in Frankfurt were both similar and different to those of other cities. Informal control within the household played a significant role and influenced the prosecution patterns of authorities. This impacted men and women differently, and created clear distinctions within the system between settled locals and unsettled migrants. fCC BY-NC0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aHistory2bisacsh 7aLaw / Legal History2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Gender Studies2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aCrime and City in History 40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/9c75bef4-eb51-4637-b5f2-697e28eb1c41zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002581nam a22003737a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450087001530200018002400240043002580290108003010400021004091000028004302640036004583000031004943360026005253370026005513380036005774900039006135201104006525400013017565880047017695900039018166500030018556500012018856550022018977580130019198300039020498560119020886b16d3bb-afbd-48a1-8b9b-0102c359dd7aScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022mau o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aTreasonbMedieval and Early Modern Adultery, Betrayal, and Shame /cLarissa Tracy. a97890044006968 ahttps://doi.org/10.1163/9789004400696 1 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/6b16d3bb-afbd-48a1-8b9b-0102c359dd7a/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aTracy, Larissaeauthor. 1aLeiden; Boston :bBrill,c2019. a1 online resource (432 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aExplorations in Medieval Culture a"The willingness to betray one's country, one's people, one's family-to commit treason and foreswear loyalty to one entity by giving it to another-is a difficult concept for many people to comprehend. Yet, societies have grappled with treason for centuries; the motivations, implications, and consequences are rarely clear cut and are often subjective. Set against the framework of modern political concerns, Treason: Medieval and Early Modern Adultery, Betrayal, and Shame considers the various forms of treachery in a variety of sources, including literature, historical chronicles, and material culture creating a complex portrait of the development of this high crime. This form of auto/biography concentrates as much on other members of one's family as on oneself, generally collapses the boundaries conventionally established between biography and autobiography, and in many cases-as Rocío G. Davis proposes for the auto/biographies of ethnic writers-crosses the frontier into history, promoting collective memory. Davis centers on how Asian American family memoirs expand the limits and function of life writing by reclaiming history and promoting community cohesion. She argues that identity is shaped by not only the stories we have been told, but also the stories we tell, making these narratives important examples of the ways we remember our family's past and tell our community's story. In the context of auto/biographical writing or filmmaking that explores specific ethnic experiences of diaspora, assimilation, and integration, this work considers two important aspects: These texts re-imagine the past by creating a work that exists both in history and as a historical document, making the creative process a form of re-enactment of the past itself. Each chapter centers on a thematic concern germane to the Asian American experience: the narrative of twentieth-century Asian wars and revolutions, which has become the subtext of a significant number of Asian American family memoirs (Pang-Mei Natasha Chang's Bound Feet and Western Dress, May-lee and Winberg Chai's The Girl from Purple Mountain, K. Connie Kang's Home Was The Land of Morning Calm, Doung Van Mai Elliott's The Sacred Willow); family experiences of travel and displacement within Asia in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which unveil a history of multiple diasporas that are often elided after families immigrate to the United States (Helie Lee's Still Life With Rice, Jael Silliman's Jewish Portraits, Indian Frames, Mira Kamdar's Motiba's Tattoos); and the development of Chinatowns as family spaces (Maxine Hong Kingston's China Men, Lisa See's On Gold Mountain, Bruce Edward Hall's Tea that Burns). The final chapter analyzes the discursive possibilities of the filmed family memoir ("family portrait documentary"), examining Lise Yasui's A Family Gathering, Ruth Ozeki Lounsbury's Halving the Bones, and Ann Marie Fleming's The Magical Life of Long Tack Sam. Davis concludes the work with a metaliterary engagement with the history of her own Asian diasporic family as she demonstrates the profound interconnection between forms of life writing. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6580 7aLiterary Criticism / American / Asian American2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Ethnic Studies / American / Asian American Studies2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Discrimination2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/85a4f24a-1904-4431-b472-780d6bd1c0afzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002070nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501390015302000180029202400420031002901080035204000210046070000370048170000330051870000340055125000100058526400320059530000230062733600260065033700260067633800360070252005100073854000160124858800470126459000390131165000430135065000200139365500220141375801300143585601190156559a75e91-1d31-4dfd-8efc-4547d9d6f849ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSlogansbSubjection, Subversion, and the Politics of Neoliberalism /cAnne-Christine Trémon, Sheyla S. Nested in debates in anthropology, philosophy, social theory and global health, the book argues that fear of and fascination with the 'next pandemic' stem not so much from an anticipation of a biological extinction of the human species, as from an expectation of the loss of mastery over human/non-humanl relations. Christos Lynteris employs the notion of the 'pandemic imaginary' in order to understand the way in which pandemic-borne human extinction refashions our understanding of humanity and its place in the world. The book challenges us to think how cosmological, aesthetic, ontological and political aspects of pandemic catastrophe are intertwined. The chapters examine the vital entanglement of epidemiological studies, popular culture, modes of scientific visualisation, and pandemic preparedness campaigns. This volume will be relevant for scholars and advanced students of anthropology as well as global health, and for many others interested in catastrophe, the 'end of the world' and the (post)apocalyptic. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Anthropology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/cae58bdb-52ad-4716-9d72-e0098b823db3zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002420nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007400153020001800227024004200245029010800287040002100395700002900416250001000445264003200455300002300487336002600510337002600536338003600562520098700598540001601585588004701601590003901648650004701687650003301734650000801767655002201775758013001797856011901927a4c379fc-d687-445e-97cd-239c6d0029ebScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aEconomic Sanctions in International Law and PracticecMasahiko Asada. a97804296280168 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97804290529891 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/a4c379fc-d687-445e-97cd-239c6d0029eb/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aAsada, Masahikoeeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2019. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aProviding perspectives from a range of experts, including international lawyers, political scientists, and practitioners, this book assesses current theory and practice of economic sanctions, discussing current legal and political challenges faced by the international community. It examines both the implementation of sanctions by major powers - the United States, the European Union, and Japan - as well as assessing the impact of those sanctions through case studies of Russia, Iran, Syria, and North Korea. Intersecting the domains of women's studies, sexuality, gender and transgender studies, Debates in Transgender, Queer, and Feminist Theory provides a critical analysis of key texts and theories, engaging in a dialogue with prominent theorists of transgendered identity, embodiment and sexual politics, and intervening in various aspects of a conceptually and politically difficult terrain. A central concern is the question of whether the theories and practices needed to foster and secure the lives of transsexuals and transgendered persons will be promoted or undermined - a concern that raises broader social, political, and ethical questions surrounding assumptions about gender, sexuality, and sexual difference; perceptions of transgendered embodiments and identities; and conceptions of divergent desires, goals and visions. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Gender Studies2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8de7af73-401f-4e66-8fa5-a8df5abe4c94zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002125nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245009500153020001800248024004200266029010800308040002100416700003200437250001000469264003200479300002300511336002600534337002600560338003600586520070500622540001601327588004701343590003901390650004301429650002001472655002201492758013001514856011901644dc8ac66a-0bf6-40b3-af4a-201bfa6227b8ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aCultural Models of NaturebPrimary Food Producers and Climate Change /cGiovanni Bennardo. a97813511278828 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813511279051 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/dc8ac66a-0bf6-40b3-af4a-201bfa6227b8/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBennardo, Giovannieeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2019. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aDrawing on the ethnographic experience of the contributors, this volume explores the Cultural Models of Nature found in a range of food-producing communities located in climate-change affected areas. This book addresses ethical and legal questions that arise when media technologies are used to give individuals unwanted attention. Drawing from a broad range of cases within the US, UK, Australia, Europe, and elsewhere, Mark Tunick asks whether privacy interests can ever be weightier than society's interest in free speech and access to information.Taking a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, and drawing on the work of political theorist Jeremy Waldron concerning toleration, the book argues that we can still have a legitimate interest in controlling the extent to which information about us is disseminated. The book begins by exploring why privacy and free speech are valuable, before developing a framework for weighing these conflicting values. By taking up key cases in the US and Europe, and the debate about a 'right to be forgotten', Tunick discusses the potential costs of limiting free speech, and points to legal remedies and other ways to develop new social attitudes to privacy in an age of instant information sharing. This book will be of great interest to students of privacy law, legal ethics, internet governance and media law in general. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aLaw / Ethics & Professional Responsibility2bisacsh 7aLaw / Media & The Law2bisacsh 7aLaw / Privacy2bisacsh 0aLaw 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/687f7109-b826-4588-af4e-82eaec21672bzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002630nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245012100153020001800274024004200292029010800334040002100442700002800463700002900491250001000520264003200530300002300562336002600585337002600611338003600637520101900673540001601692588004701708590003901755650005501794650004501849650005301894650001401947655002201961758013001983856011902113eff046de-9520-43fd-9a64-dcef7ce4d1f7ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aAdult Language Education and MigrationbChallenging agendas in policy and practice /cJames Simpson, Anne Whiteside. a97813175127698 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813157183611 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/eff046de-9520-43fd-9a64-dcef7ce4d1f7/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aSimpson, Jameseeditor.1 aWhiteside, Anneeeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2015. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aAdult Language Education and Migration: Challenging Agendas in Policy and Practice provides a lively and critical examination of policy and practice in language education for adult migrants around the world, showing how opportunities for learning the language of a new country both shape and are shaped by policy moves. It asks the urgent question: how critical practice might cultivate radical thought, further social justice, and value human expression? fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aLiterary Criticism2bisacsh 7aLiterary Collections2bisacsh 7aAnthologies2lcgft 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/f67cc043-640f-4f28-91bb-61f6bc1d4dcczView this content on BiblioBoard.7004645nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245016000153020001800313024004200331029010800373040002100481100002700502700003100529700003000560250001000590264003200600300002300632336002600655337002600681338003600707520299800743540001603741588004703757590003903804650006003843650005903903650001403962655002203976758013003998856011904128595f0aa6-5f0b-440e-b6e0-ba31f764b96fScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Work of CommunicationbRelational Perspectives on Working and Organizing in Contemporary Capitalism /cTimothy Kuhn, Karen L Ashcraft, Francois Cooren. a97813513335048 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813156807051 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/595f0aa6-5f0b-440e-b6e0-ba31f764b96f/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aKuhn, Timothyeauthor.1 aAshcraft, Karen Leauthor.1 aCooren, Francoiseauthor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2019. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThe Work of Communication: Relational Perspectives on Working and Organizing in Contemporary Capitalism revolves around a two-part question: "What have work and organization become under contemporary capitalism-and how should organization studies approach them?" Changes in the texture of capitalism, heralded by social and organizational theorists alike, increasingly focus attention on communication as both vital to the conduct of work and as imperative to organizational performance. Yet most accounts of communication in organization studies fail to understand an alternate sense of the "work of communication" in the constitution of organizations, work practices, and economies. This book responds to that lack by portraying communicative practices-as opposed to individuals, interests, technologies, structures, organizations, or institutions-as the focal units of analysis in studies of the social and organizational problems occasioned by contemporary capitalism. Rather than suggesting that there exists a canonically "correct" route communicative analyses must follow, The Work of Communication: Relational Perspectives on Working and Organizing in Contemporary Capitalism explores the value of transcending longstanding divides between symbolic and material factors in studies of working and organizing. The recognition of dramatic shifts in technological, economic, and political forces, along with deep interconnections among the myriad of factors shaping working and organizing, sows doubts about whether organization studies is up to the vital task of addressing the social problems capitalism now creates. Kuhn, Ashcraft, and Cooren argue that novel insights into those social problems are possible if we tell different stories about working and organizing. To aid authors of those stories, they develop a set of conceptual resources that they capture under the mantle of communicative relationality. These resources allow analysts to profit from burgeoning interest in notions such as sociomateriality, posthumanism, performativity, and affect. It goes on to illustrate the benefits that investigations of work and organization can realize from communicative relationality by presenting case studies that analyze (a) the becoming of an idea, from its inception to solidification, (b) the emergence of what is taken to be the "the product" in high-tech startup entrepreneurship, and (c) the branding of work (in this case, academic writing and commercial aviation) through affective economies. Taken together, the book portrays "the work of communication" as simultaneously about how work in the "new economy" revolves around communicative practice and about how communication serves as a mode of explanation with the potential to cultivate novel stories about working and organizing. Aimed at academics, researchers, and policy makers, this book's goal is to make tangible the contributions of communication for thinking about contemporary social and organizational problems. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aBusiness & Economics / Organizational Behavior2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Business Communication2bisacsh 0aEconomics 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/595f0aa6-5f0b-440e-b6e0-ba31f764b96fzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002384nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007600153020001800229024004200247029010800289040002100397100002700418250001000445264003200455300002300487336002600510337002600536338003600562520097800598540001601576588004701592590003901639650005501678650001801733655002201751758013001773856011901903aa5e1cd6-6ae4-4f92-ba7a-57a80a9df817ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20172022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Language of Jokes in the Digital AgebViral Humour /cDelia Chiaro. a97813513799538 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813151463481 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/aa5e1cd6-6ae4-4f92-ba7a-57a80a9df817/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aChiaro, Deliaeauthor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2017. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aIn this accessible book, Delia Chiaro provides a fresh overview of the language of jokes in a globalized and digitalized world. The book shows how, while on the one hand the lingua-cultural nuts and bolts of jokes have remained unchanged over time, on the other, the time-space compression brought about by modern technology has generated new settings and new ways of joking and playing with language. The Language of Jokes in the Digital Age covers a wide range of settings from social networks, e-mails and memes, to more traditional fields of film and TV (especially sitcoms and game shows) and advertising. Chiaro's consideration of the increasingly virtual context of jokes delights with both up-to-date examples and frequent reference to the most central theories of comedy. This lively book will be essential reading for any student or researcher working in the area of language and humour and will be of interest to those in language and media and sociolinguistics. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aLanguage Arts & Disciplines / Linguistics2bisacsh 0aLanguage arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/aa5e1cd6-6ae4-4f92-ba7a-57a80a9df817zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002771nam a22003737a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724500780015302000180023102400420024902901080029104000210039910000300042025000100045026400320046030000230049233600260051533700260054133800360056752012720060354000160187558800470189159000390193865000700197765000570204765000220210465500220212675801300214885601190227877e1f07c-98e0-4397-a68e-c1bb9a29b4f6ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe G20bEvolution, Interrelationships, Documentation /cPeter I. The emergence of the G20 was the result of calls for full inclusion of major developing and other systemically important countries and to reflect new global economic and political realities. The growth of Chinese power, growing significance of other major developing countries and new concerns concerning anti-globalization and rising protectionism in the West have all resulted in important changes to the dynamics of the institution. The suspension of Russia's membership in the G8 has also necessitated a change in G7/G20 dynamics and the G20's processes, agenda priorities and role in global governance. Providing a historical overview and analysis of the evolving agenda, methods of performance evaluation, relationship with structured international organizations and other external actors, Hajnal's text is an authoritative work of history, analysis and reference on the G20 and also G7/G8/G20 reform. This book is an essential source for researchers and students focusing on the G20, international organizations and global governance, and more generally for scholars in the fields of political science, economics, and finance. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aBusiness & Economics / International / Economics & Trade2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science / International Relations2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/77e1f07c-98e0-4397-a68e-c1bb9a29b4f6zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002170nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008500153020001800238024004200256029010800298040002100406700002700427700003000454700003200484250001000516264003200526300002300558336002600581337002600607338003600633520067900669540001601348588004701364590003901411650004301450650002001493655002201513758013001535856011901665f9cfc63c-e40d-4f3d-bc86-60355a00f2f4ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Anthropology of EpidemicscAnn H. The Anthropology of Epidemics approaches epidemics as total social phenomena: processes and events which encompass and exercise a transformational impact on social life whilst at the same time functioning as catalysts of shifts and ruptures as regards human/non-human relations. Bearing a particular mark on subject areas and questions which have recently come to shape developments in anthropological thinking, the volume brings epidemics to the forefront of anthropological debate, as an exemplary arena for social scientific study and analysis. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Anthropology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/f9cfc63c-e40d-4f3d-bc86-60355a00f2f4zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002947nam a22003977a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450079001530200018002320240042002500290108002920400021004001000027004212500010004482640032004583000023004903360026005133370026005393380036005654900068006015201357006695400016020265880047020425900039020896500039021286500035021676500008022026550022022107580130022328300068023628560119024309e525313-6eb4-49e2-81d1-b42de9c11df0ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20172022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSocial Networks as the New Frontier of Terrorismb#Terror /cLaura Scaife. a97813173618488 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813156686801 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/9e525313-6eb4-49e2-81d1-b42de9c11df0/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aScaife, Lauraeauthor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2017. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Research in Information Technology and E-Commerce Law aTerrorism. Jim Collins describes how a once solitary and print-based experience has become an exuberantly social activity, enjoyed as much on the screen as on the page. Fueled by Oprah's Book Club, Miramax film adaptations, superstore bookshops, and new technologies such as the Kindle digital reader, literary fiction has been transformed into best-selling, high-concept entertainment. Collins highlights the infrastructural and cultural changes that have given rise to a flourishing reading public at a time when the future of the book has been called into question. Book reading, he claims, has not become obsolete; it has become integrated into popular visual media.Collins explores how digital technologies and the convergence of literary, visual, and consumer cultures have changed what counts as a "literary experience" in phenomena ranging from lush film adaptations such as The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love to the customer communities at Amazon. Central to Collins's analysis and, he argues, to contemporary literary culture, is the notion that refined taste is now easily acquired; it is just a matter of knowing where to access it and whose advice to trust. Using recent novels, he shows that the redefined literary landscape has affected not just how books are being read, but also what sort of novels are being written for these passionate readers. Collins connects literary bestsellers from The Jane Austen Book Club and Literacy and Longing in L.A. to Saturday and The Line of Beauty, highlighting their depictions of fictional worlds filled with avid readers and their equations of reading with cultivated consumer taste. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 8fa76abc-9402-4dd0-9733-d0fb59c73113 7aLiterary Criticism / Books & Reading2bisacsh 7aPerforming Arts / Film / History & Criticism2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Popular Culture2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/d4ff2270-c980-454e-8fe4-5ddf70ecb1e7zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002433nam a22003497a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450102001530200018002550240040002730290108003130400021004211000031004422640057004733000023005303360026005533370026005793380036006055201024006415400016016655880047016815900039017286500033017676500012018006550022018127580130018348560119019641d936d0d-9d52-4ace-a906-8edb38c61e4bScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aStorytellingbThe Destruction of the Inalienable in the Age of the Holocaust /cRodolphe Gasché. a97814384714718 ahttps://doi.org/10.1353/book.1011741 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/1d936d0d-9d52-4ace-a906-8edb38c61e4b/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aGasché, Rodolpheeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bState University of New York Press,c2018. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aIn Storytelling, Rodolphe Gasché reexamines the muteness of Holocaust survivors, that is, their inability to tell their stories. This phenomenon has not been explained up to now without reducing the violence of the events to which survivors were subjected, on the one hand, and diminishing the specific harm that has been done to them as human beings, on the other. Distinguishing storytelling from testifying and providing information, Gasché asserts that the utter senselessness of the violence inflicted upon them is what inhibited survivors from making sense of their experience in the form of tellable stories. In a series of readings of major theories of storytelling by three thinkers-Wilhelm Schapp, whose work will be a welcome discovery to many English-speaking audiences, Walter Benjamin, and Hannah Arendt-Gasché systematically assesses the consequences of the loss of the storytelling faculty, considered by some an inalienable possession of the human, both for the victims' humanity and for philosophy. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aHistory / Holocaust2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/1d936d0d-9d52-4ace-a906-8edb38c61e4bzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002493nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007300153020001800226029010800244040002100352100002400373264004000397300003100437336002600468337002600494338003600520490003400556520109500590540001301685588004701698590003901745650003001784650001201814655002201826758013001848830003401978856011902012f4ca80f7-1173-4d5f-8c03-9970a8cb4a35ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aCatholicism and Fascism in Europe 1918 - 1945cJan Nelis.nVolume 26 a97834874212781 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/f4ca80f7-1173-4d5f-8c03-9970a8cb4a35/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aNelis, Janeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bGeorg Olms Verlag,c2015. a1 online resource (418 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aHistorische Texte und Studien aThe papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book's general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent - an endeavour that is unprecedented -, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive 'cluster' model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research. fCC BY-SA0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aHistory / Europe2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aHistorische Texte und Studien40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/f4ca80f7-1173-4d5f-8c03-9970a8cb4a35zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002958nam a22004097a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450154001530200018003070240043003250290108003680400021004761000034004977000026005317000027005572640035005843000031006193360026006503370026006763380036007024900138007385201051008765400016019275880047019435900039019905900044020296500046020736500020021196550022021397580130021618300138022918560119024296e7ac0b7-969d-4710-b869-974e93d9f1caScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20122022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aConstructing Virtue and VicebFemininity and Laughter in Courtly Society (ca. 1150-1300) /cOlga V. By engaging with the competing, and at times contradictory, views of female laughter, it reaffirms a disputatious nature of medieval culture, in which multiple views of femininity, sexuality, and virtue stood in a conflicting, yet productive, dialogue with one another. The society that emerges when one looks at medieval German texts is always ambivalent: it thrives on and enjoys talking about sensuality and eroticism, while being constrained by the conventions of polite behavior and the fear of sin; it relies on the ritual use of laughter, while marking it as a sign of lust and perdition. Women's laughter thus offers an important way into understanding medieval views of gender because it combines physicality with shifting and conflicting cultural norms. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6390 7aSocial Science / Women's Studies2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aTransatlantische Studien zu Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit/Transatlantic Studies on Medieval and Early Modern Literature and Culture40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/6e7ac0b7-969d-4710-b869-974e93d9f1cazView this content on BiblioBoard.7002504nam a22004097a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245013300153020001800286024004300304029010800347040002100455100003100476700002700507700004300534264003500577300003000612336002600642337002600668338003600694490009800730520066500828540001601493588004701509590003901556590004401595650006401639650002201703655002201725758013001747830009801877856011901975aca98a8d-e0e6-4b0f-95da-43b77f2f004eScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20132022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aOut of EmpirebRedefining Africa's Place in the World /cFrederick Cooper, Franz Römer, Susanne Weigelin-Schwiedrzik.nVolume 8 a97837370009708 ahttps://doi.org/10.14220/97837373009701 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/aca98a8d-e0e6-4b0f-95da-43b77f2f004e/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCooper, Frederickeauthor.1 aRömer, Franzeeditor.1 aWeigelin-Schwiedrzik, Susanneeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bV&R unipress,c2013. a1 online resource (30 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aFakultätsvorträge der Philologisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien aThe history of decolonization is usually written backward, as if the end-point (a world of juridically equivalent nation-states) was known from the start. But the routes out of colonial empire appear more varied. Some Africans sought equal rights within empire, others to federate among themselves; some sought independence. In London or Paris, officials realized they had to reform colonial empires, but not necessarily give them up. The idea of "development" became a way to assert that empires could be made both more productive and more legitimate. Frederick Cooper explores how these alternative possibilities narrowed between 1945 and approximately 1960. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6408 7aPolitical Science / Colonialism & Post-colonialism2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aFakultätsvorträge der Philologisch-Kulturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Wien40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/aca98a8d-e0e6-4b0f-95da-43b77f2f004ezView this content on BiblioBoard.7002261nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245009700153020001800250024004300268029010800311040002100419100003000440264004000470300003100510336002600541337002600567338003600593490002900629520064600658540001601304588004701320590003901367590004401406650003201450650004301482650003801525655002201563758013001585830002901715856011901744d10f0e90-6c64-4280-a854-456c2cd128d7ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20172022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aMelting Pots & MosaicsbChildren of Immigrants in US-American Literature /cRüdiger Heinze. a97838394404528 ahttps://doi.org/10.14361/97838394404521 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/d10f0e90-6c64-4280-a854-456c2cd128d7/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aHeinze, Rüdigereauthor. 1a[s.l.] :btranscript Verlag,c2017. a1 online resource (301 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aAmerican Culture Studies aIn the past decades, children of immigrants have drawn increased attention not only in press and media, but also in a number of academic fields, among them sociology, history, or ethnology. Surprisingly, literary and cultural studies have been somewhat more reluctant to approach the topic. While there is work on individual authors or, at the very most, particular ethnic groups, comparative approaches are rare. This monograph aims to amend this. It provides an extensive discussion of US-American literature about children of immigrants, comparing different authors, different ethnic groups and different literary and historical contexts. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7114 7aLiterary Criticism2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / American2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aAmerican Culture Studies40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/d10f0e90-6c64-4280-a854-456c2cd128d7zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002412nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245010700153020001800260024004300278029010800321040002100429100003000450264004000480300003100520336002600551337002600577338003600603490002900639520077000668540001601438588004701454590003901501650005501540650004301595650003801638650003801676655002201714758013001736830002901866856011901895ef3984ef-767e-4e5b-8059-1934bcbb6b3eScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aFugitive BordersbBlack Canadian Cross-Border Literature at Mid-Nineteenth Century /cNele Sawallisch. a97838394450208 ahttps://doi.org/10.14361/97838394450201 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ef3984ef-767e-4e5b-8059-1934bcbb6b3e/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aSawallisch, Neleeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :btranscript Verlag,c2018. a1 online resource (219 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aAmerican Culture Studies aFugitive Borders explores a new archive of 19th-century autobiographical writing by black authors in North America. For that purpose, Nele Sawallisch examines four different texts written by formerly enslaved men in the 1850s that emerged in or around the historical region of Canada West (now known as Ontario) and that defy the genre conventions of the classic slave narrative. Instead, these texts demonstrate originality in expressing complex, often ambivalent attitudes towards the so-called Canadian Promised Land and contribute to a form of textual community-building across national borders. In the context of emerging national discourses before Canada's Confederation in 1867, they offer alternatives to the hegemonic narrative of the white settler nation. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Emigration & Immigration2bisacsh 7aLiterary Criticism / American2bisacsh 7aHistory / Social History2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aAmerican Culture Studies40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/ef3984ef-767e-4e5b-8059-1934bcbb6b3ezView this content on BiblioBoard.7002017nam a22003857a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501240015302000180027702400370029502901080033204000210044070000300046170000380049170000270052926400450055630000310060133600260063233700260065833800360068452004320072054000130115258800470116559000390121259000440125165000450129565000200134065500220136075801300138285601190151290b070d0-f54d-4e25-818d-2bb35b589ac8ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGender in FocusbIdentities, Codes, Stereotypes and Politics /cAndreea Zamfira, Christian de Montlibert, Daniela Radu. a97838474121138 ahttps://doi.org/10.3224/847421831 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/90b070d0-f54d-4e25-818d-2bb35b589ac8/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aZamfira, Andreeaeeditor.1 ade Montlibert, Christianeeditor.1 aRadu, Danielaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bVerlag Barbara Budrich,c2018. a1 online resource (372 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis book deals with the interplay between identities, codes, stereotypes and politics governing the various constructions and deconstructions of gender in several Western and non-Western societies (Germany, Italy, Serbia, Romania, Cameroon, Indonesia, Vietnam, and others). Curran argues that law provided Shakespeare with the conceptual resources to imagine selfhood in social and distributed terms, as a product of interpersonal exchange or gathering of various material forces. Curran reveals Shakespeare's distinctly communitarian vision of personal and political experience, the way he regarded living and acting in the world as materially and socially embedded practices. At the center of the book is Shakespeare's fascination with questions fundamental to law and philosophy: What are the sources of agency? For whom am I responsible, and how far does responsibility extend? Curran guides readers through Shakespeare's responses, paying attention to historical and intellectual contexts. The result is a new theory of Shakespeare's relationship to law and an original account of law's role in the ethical work of his writings. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aLiterary Criticism / Renaissance2bisacsh 0aLiteraturexHistory and criticism 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aRethinking the Early Modern40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/a1377a97-1180-467a-8fe1-7e3a22fcb212zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002874nam a22003857a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450155001530200018003080240043003260290108003690400021004771000038004982640042005363000031005783360026006093370026006353380036006614900033006975201222007305400016019525880047019685900039020155900044020546500064020986500022021626550022021847580130022068300033023368560119023699e40562c-ab5a-4a3f-912f-3690ee90fa2dScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20182022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aPursuing Whiteness in the ColoniesbPrivate Memories from the Congo Freestate and German East Africa (1884-1914) /cDiana Miryong Natermann.nVolume 3 a97838309869048 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309369091 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/9e40562c-ab5a-4a3f-912f-3690ee90fa2d/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aNatermann, Diana Miryongeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2018. a1 online resource (269 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aHistorische Belgienforschung aPursuing Whiteness in the Colonies offers a new comprehension of colonial history from below by taking remnants of individual agencies from a whiteness studies perspective. It highlights the experiences and perceptions of colonisers and how they portrayed and re-interpreted their identities in Africa. The transcolonial approach is based on egodocuments from Belgian, German and Swedish men and women who migrated to Central Africa for reasons like a love for adventure, social betterment, new gender roles, or the conviction that colonising was their patriotic duty.
The author presents how colonisers constructed their whiteness in relation to the subalterns in everyday situations connected to friendship, animals, gender and food. White culture was often practiced to maintain the idea(l) of European supremacy, for example by upholding white dining cultures. The welcoming notion of 'breaking bread' was replaced by a dining culture that reinforced white identity and segregated white from non-white people.
By combining colonial history with whiteness studies in an African setting the author provides a different understanding of imperial realities as they were experienced by colonisers in situ. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7178 7aPolitical Science / Colonialism & Post-colonialism2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aHistorische Belgienforschung40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/9e40562c-ab5a-4a3f-912f-3690ee90fa2dzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002337nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245009200153020001800245024004300263029010800306040002100414700003300435700003000468264004200498300003100540336002600571337002600597338003600623520081400659540001601473588004701489590003901536590004401575650005501619650001801674655002201692758013001714856011901844ba178cfb-071c-4d8b-87af-237f5bd82891ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20162022xx o u00| u ger d 5BiblioBoard00aLanguage and NationbCrossroads and Connections /cGuri Ellen Barstad, Arnstein Hjelde. a97838309849798 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309849791 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/ba178cfb-071c-4d8b-87af-237f5bd82891/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBarstad, Guri Elleneeditor.1 aHjelde, Arnsteineeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2016. a1 online resource (320 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aStudies on the relation between language, identity and nation (building) represent a long tradition in linguistic, cultural and political research. Successful communication and traffic relied on the mediating agency of persons who had been exposed, often in their childhood or through captivities, to the customs and languages of both cultures involved in the contact. Other border crossers and go-betweens acted as missionaries, traders, political refugees, beachcombers, pirates, anthropologists, actors in zoos, runaway slaves, and itinerant doctors. Because of their frequently precarious lives, the written traces left by these figures are often thin. While some of their lives have to be carefully reconstructed through critical readings of the documents left by others (frequently by their enemies), others have left autobiographical texts which allow for a richer assessment of their function as cultural border crossers and mediators.
With examples covering from various historical periods between the early modern period and the present, as well as geographical areas such as the Mediterranean, Africa, the Americas, Hawaii, New Zealand and northern Europe, scholars from various disciplines and methodological backgrounds - reaching from history to religious studies and from literary studies to ethnology - fathom the intricacies of in-betweeness and reflect on the impact which "agents of transculturation" have in situations of cultural, social and political encounters. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7165 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/0618faac-cbd8-479f-a810-c80e6faad1efzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002478nam a22003737a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008700153020001800240024004300258029010800301040002100409700003000430700003500460264004200495300003100537336002600568337002600594338003600620520096600656540001601622588004701638590003901685590004401724650004501768650002001813655002201833758013001855856011901985cd88f268-bb02-4212-b0f0-2b5513bee492ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20132022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGender and SportbChanges and Challenges /cGertrud Pfister, Mari Kristin Sisjord. a97838309787328 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309787321 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/cd88f268-bb02-4212-b0f0-2b5513bee492/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aPfister, Gertrudeeditor.1 aSisjord, Mari Kristineeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2013. a1 online resource (276 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis volume covers current issues, cutting-edge debates and new knowledge on women and sport. The contributions in this volume approach the entanglement of science and cultural encounters - many of them in colonial settings - from a variety of perspectives. Historical and historiographical survey essays sketch a transcultural history of knowledge and conduct a critical dialogue between the recent academic fields of Postcolonial Studies and Science & Empire Studies; a series of case studies explores the topos of Europe's 'great inventions', the scientific exploitation of culturally unfamiliar people and objects, the representation of indigenous cultures in discourses of geographical exploration, as well as non-European scientific practices. 'Entangled Knowledges' also refers to the critical practices of scholarship: various essays investigate scholarship's own failures in self-reflexivity, arising from an uncritical appropriation of cultural stereotypes and colonial myths, of which the discourse of Orientalism in historiography and residual racialist assumptions in modern genetics serve as examples. The volume thus contributes to the study of cultural and colonial relations as well as to the history of science and scholarship. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7158 7aHistory / Europe2bisacsh 0aHistory 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/bebce5b6-c62e-4705-92c2-d8dfde16f9e8zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002949nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008300153020001800236024004300254029010800297040002100405700002900426700003000455264004200485300003100527336002600558337002600584338003600610490005800646520131200704540001602016588004702032590003902079590004402118650004002162650002002202655002202222758013002244830005802374856011902432f3a08a82-c2b9-4dfd-ad3d-aa51e7165507ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20112022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aEmbodiments of Cultural EncounterscSebastian Jobs, Gesa Mackenthun.nVolume 3 a97838309754898 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309754891 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/f3a08a82-c2b9-4dfd-ad3d-aa51e7165507/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aJobs, Sebastianeeditor.1 aMackenthun, Gesaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2011. a1 online resource (270 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship aThe meeting of members of different cultures, frequently conceptualized in abstract terms, always involves the meeting of human bodies. This volume brings together contributions by scholars of various disciplines that address physical aspects and effects of cultural encounters in historical and present-day settings. Bodies were and are not only markers of cultural identity and difference, endlessly inscribed and represented as the 'body politic' or 'the exotic other'; as battlegrounds of cross-cultural signification and identification bodies are also potential agents of change. While some essays address the elusiveness of the 'real' or material body, forever lost behind a veil of textual and visual representation, others analyze the performative effect of such representations - their function of disciplining colonized bodies and subjects by integrating them into Western systems of cultural signification and scientific classification. Yet, as the volume also shows, formerly colonized people, far from subjecting themselves completely to Western discourses of physical discipline, retain traditional body practices - whether in food culture, religious ritual, or musical performances. Such local reinscriptions escape the grip of Western culture and transform the global semantics of the body. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7152 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/f3a08a82-c2b9-4dfd-ad3d-aa51e7165507zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003734nam a22003977a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450157001530200018003100240043003280290108003710400021004797000031005007000030005312640042005613000031006033360026006343370026006603380036006864900058007225202023007805400016028035880047028195900039028665900044029056500038029496500020029876550022030077580130030298300058031598560119032170a135075-1754-4ec0-9e08-7a2f309f0b37ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20102022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aHuman Bondage in the Cultural Contact ZonebTransdisciplinary Perspectives on Slavery and Its Discourses /cRaphael Hörmann, Gesa Mackenthun.nVolume 2 a97838309737518 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309737511 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/0a135075-1754-4ec0-9e08-7a2f309f0b37/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aHörmann, Raphaeleeditor.1 aMackenthun, Gesaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2010. a1 online resource (296 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship aSlavery - the subjection of some human beings to a state of bondage by other, more powerful, people - has been an accepted social institution since ancient times. It is less well known that slavery has also produced cultural contact zones in forcing members of different cultures into sharing the same places - whether in private households, on plantations, in mines and quarries, or indeed the same imaginative sites in works of art and public memory. The recent commemorations of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade by Britain (1807) and the United States (1808), as well as the rise of Black Atlantic Studies as a new academic field, have drawn new attention to this topic. In spite of these recent trends and the prominent position of slavery studies in British and American historiography, slavery's implications for the study of cultural encounters remain a scholarly desideratum. This volume seeks to contribute to a better understanding of different forms of human bondage in cultural contact zones.
The essays in this collection represent a wide spectrum of the scholarship on slavery, as well as illustrating the vast range of conceptual approaches to the topic. They bring together research from several different disciplines and critical angles addressing, for example, archaeological reconstructions of labor camps in an cient Palestine, the moral significance of early Christian slavery, the ambivalent aestheticization of black bodies within the colonial culture of taste, Enlightenment discourses about black revolution, the significance of mythical narratives in African-American slave culture, the musical mourning for lynching victims, and the blindness toward the presence of slave laborers in Nazi Germany.
Most essays collected here are concerned with the cultural and human aspects of slavery as well as with establishing an understanding for the stark differences between various forms of slavery throughout history, stretching from antiquity into the twentieth century. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7149 7aSocial Science / Slavery2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aCultural Encounters and the Discourses of Scholarship40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/0a135075-1754-4ec0-9e08-7a2f309f0b37zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002582nam a22003857a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450084001530200018002370240043002550290108002980400021004061000027004272640042004543000031004963360026005273370026005533380036005794900038006155201029006535400016016825880047016985900039017455900044017846500045018286500014018736550022018877580130019098300038020398560119020778872fb20-a871-43ea-b4f1-c062625a66b0ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20112022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aBilingual Language ProficiencybA Comparative Study /cJoana Duarte.nVolume 17 a97838309731718 ahttps://doi.org/10.31244/97838309731711 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/8872fb20-a871-43ea-b4f1-c062625a66b0/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aDuarte, Joanaeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bWaxmann Verlag GmbH,c2011. a1 online resource (320 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aInterkulturelle Bildungsforschung aThis book investigates the role native language plays in the process of acquiring a second language within a bilingual educational model. The research presented is based on a 2 year longitudinal study of students in a bilingual school. Particular attention is paid to the development of academic language proficiency. Performance in both languages was compared between two groups of peers learning in submersion classes in Germany and in Portugal. This comparison allows the assessment of effects of a given bilingual education programme.
There is a considerable advantage found for the students who learned in the bilingual environment, both in written and in oral samples. These students developed a more proficient bilingual academic discourse ability; socioeconomic status and cognitive abilities were controlled for. When comparing the results with an external measure for school achievement, the advantage was confirmed. The results also hint at didactic factors which seem to contribute to this performance. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7147 7aEducation / Bilingual Education2bisacsh 0aEducation 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aInterkulturelle Bildungsforschung40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8872fb20-a871-43ea-b4f1-c062625a66b0zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002245nam a22003497a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450099001530200018002520290108002700400021003781000027003992640034004263000031004603360026004913370026005173380036005435200839005795400016014185880047014345900039014815900044015206500040015646500020016046550022016247580130016468560119017769f93b771-3089-402c-bade-d9482349d0e4ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20112022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aCapitalism's New ClothesbEnterprise, Ethics and Enjoyment in Times of Crisis /cCiara Cremin. a97818496458981 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/9f93b771-3089-402c-bade-d9482349d0e4/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aCremin, Ciaraeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2011. a1 online resource (209 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aFrom broadsheet newspapers to television shows and Hollywood films, capitalism is increasingly recognised as a system detrimental to human existence. Colin Cremin investigates why, despite this de-robing, capitalism remains a powerful and seductive force. Using materialist, psychoanalytic and linguistic approaches, Cremin shows how capitalism, anxiety and desire enter into a mutually supporting relationship. He identifies three ways in which we are tied in to capitalism - through a social imperative for enterprise and competition; through enjoyment and consumption; and through the depoliticisation of ethical debate by government and business. Capitalism's New Clothes is ideal for students of sociology and for anyone worried about the ethics of capitalism or embarrassed by the enjoyments the system has afforded them. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6882 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/9f93b771-3089-402c-bade-d9482349d0e4zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002395nam a22003737a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450123001530200018002760290108002940400021004021000026004237000027004497000027004762640034005033000031005373360026005683370026005943380036006205200873006565400016015295880047015455900039015925900044016316500055016756500020017306550022017507580130017728560119019023d486771-d685-4b37-9d62-7138a04135a7ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20142022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aSans PapiersbThe Social and Economic Lives of Young Undocumented Migrants /cAlice Block, Nando Sigona, Roger Zetter. a97818496490321 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/3d486771-d685-4b37-9d62-7138a04135a7/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aBlock, Aliceeauthor.1 aSigona, Nandoeauthor.1 aZetter, Rogereauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2014. a1 online resource (201 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aUndocumented migration is a huge global phenomenon, yet little is known about the reality of life for those involved. Since the publication of the first edition in 2006, Mohamedou has brought the text right up-to-date. Starting with Al Qaeda's creation almost twenty years ago, and sketching its global mutation, Mohamedou explains that there is a cogent strategy to Al Qaeda's actions. He shows that the 'war on terror' is failing, only serving to recruit more terrorists to Al Qaeda's cause. He also puts forward a case for how the international community can best respond. Arguing that it is dangerous to dismiss Al Qaeda as illogical and irrational, this incisive and original book is important for policy-makers and ideal for undergraduates in international relations, Middle East studies and peace/conflict studies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6923 7aPolitical Science / Terrorism2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8c7a1e0f-4f68-4b69-9a3d-bab4e16df001zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002300nam a22003737a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450094001530200018002470290108002650400021003731000026003942640034004203000031004543360026004853370026005113380036005375200802005735400016013755880047013915900039014385900044014776500030015216500062015516500031016136500011016446550022016557580130016778560119018074c5421ca-1457-47a4-ba50-59ecb19612faScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aGreen Parties, Green FuturebFrom Local Groups to the International Stage /cPer Gahrton. a97817837150841 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/4c5421ca-1457-47a4-ba50-59ecb19612fa/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aGahrton, Pereauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2015. a1 online resource (257 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aOver the past four decades the world has seen a 'green awakening'. Green parties have been elected to parliaments and councils all over the world. A common set of environmental priorities have been promoted by green internationalisation and these parties are playing an increasing role at all levels of political decision-making. Will this awakening continue or will the greens be corrupted by power? What impact has their politics had? Will green thinking be able to compete with other ideologies in coping with the problems of the 21st century? Green Parties, Green Future analyses over a hundred of these parties' experience from all over the world. It reveals the story of the expansion and development of the movement, from local environmental groups to national and global decision-makers. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6895 7aNature / Ecology2bisacsh 7aNature / Environmental Conservation & Protection2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science2bisacsh 0aNature 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/4c5421ca-1457-47a4-ba50-59ecb19612fazView this content on BiblioBoard.7002930nam a22003737a 450000100370000000300080003700500170004500600190006200700150008100800410009603700160013724501060015302000180025902901080027704000210038510000320040626400340043830000310047233600260050333700260052933800360055552013550059154000160194658800470196259000390200959000440204865000660209265000480215865000570220665000220226365500220228575801300230785601190243750b9ca1c-0871-4b61-9d27-51606f063f47ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20112022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDevelopment Against DemocracybManipulating Political Change in the Third World /cIrene L. In the mid-twentieth century, models of development studies were products of postwar American policy. They focused on newly independent states in the Global South, aiming to assure their pro-Western orientation by promoting economic growth, political reform and liberal democracy. However, this prevented real democracy and radical change. Today, projects of democracy have evolved in a radically different political environment that seems to have little in common with the postwar period. Development Against Democracy, however, testifies to a revealing continuity in foreign policy, including in justifications of 'humanitarian intervention' that echo those of counterinsurgency decades earlier in Latin America, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Irene L. Gendzier argues that the fundamental ideas on which theories of modernisation and development rest have been resurrected in contemporary policy and its theories, representing the continuity of postwar US foreign policy in a world permanently altered by globalisation and its multiple discontents, the proliferation of 'failed states,' the unprecedented exodus of refugees, and Washington's declaration of a permanent war against terrorism. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6888 7aPolitical Science / Political Ideologies / Democracy2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Development2bisacsh 7aPolitical Science / International Relations2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/50b9ca1c-0871-4b61-9d27-51606f063f47zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002395nam a22003617a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960370016001372450136001530200018002890290108003070400021004157000028004367000029004642640034004933000031005273360026005583370026005843380036006105200897006465400016015435880047015595900039016065900044016456500051016896500022017406550022017627580130017848560119019148991b2ba-efb2-4b58-8bf6-70c923da58aaScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20122022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aArms and the PeoplebPopular Movements and the Military from the Paris Commune to the Arab Spring /cMike Gonzalez, Houman Barekat. a97818496480971 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/8991b2ba-efb2-4b58-8bf6-70c923da58aa/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aGonzalez, Mikeeeditor.1 aBarekat, Houmaneeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2012. a1 online resource (299 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThis collection examines the relationship between mass movements and the military. Some argue that it is impossible to achieve and protect a revolution without the support of the army, but how can the support of the army be won? Arms and the People explores the impact of social extremes on the solidarity within the state's military, and on the changing loyalties of these soldiers. The authors examine a series of historical moments in which a crisis in the military has reflected deep instability in the wider world, including Russia in 1917, Egypt during the Arab Spring, the Paris Commune, as well as long-standing instability in Venezuela and Indonesia, amongst many others. Including a range of international authors who have either studied or been directly involved in such social upheavals, Arms and the People is a pioneering contribution to the study of revolutionary change. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6879 7aPolitical Science / Political Freedom2bisacsh 0aPolitical science 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/8991b2ba-efb2-4b58-8bf6-70c923da58aazView this content on BiblioBoard.7002491nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245016400153020001800317029010800335040002100443700002700464700002900491700002800520264003400548300003100582336002600613337002600639338003600665490003800701520082400739540001601563588004701579590003901626590004401665650005501709650002001764655002201784758013001806830003801936856011901974834674d8-779a-4d58-808c-516757d11426ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20142022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Anthropology of SecuritybPerspectives from the Frontline of Policing, Counter-terrorism and Border Control /cMark Maguire, Catarina Frois, Nils Zurawski. a97817837116281 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/834674d8-779a-4d58-808c-516757d11426/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aMaguire, Markeeditor.1 aFrois, Catarinaeeditor.1 aZurawski, Nilseeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2014. a1 online resource (225 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aAnthropology, Culture and Society aIn a post-Cold War world of political unease and economic crisis, processes of securitisation are transforming nation-states, their citizens and non-citizens in profound ways. This is the first collection of anthropological studies of security with a particular but not exclusive emphasis on Europe. The Anthropology of Security draws together studies on the lived experiences of security and policing from the perspective of those most affected in their everyday lives. Should only economically useful immigrants be allowed? What should be done with unwanted or 'illegal' immigrants? In this bold intervention, Alexandra Hall shows that immigration detention centres offer a window onto society's broader attitudes towards immigrants. Despite periodic media scandals, remarkably little has been written about the everyday workings of this system, or about the people responsible for setting immigration policy. Detention, particularly, is a hidden side of border politics, despite its growing international importance as a tool of control and security. This book also looks at the social life and the relationships between officers and immigrants to explore broad social trends, as well as resistance within the system, and provides rare insights into the treatment of the 'other'. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6880 7aSocial Science / Emigration & Immigration2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Anthropology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aAnthropology, Culture and Society40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/aff06a3e-44a7-4e0b-82a2-0485298fc042zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002563nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245013600153020001800289029010800307040002100415700002700436700002600463264003400489300003100523336002600554337002600580338003600606520094700642540001601589588004701605590003901652590004401691650004701735650004801782650006201830650001401892655002201906758013001928856011902058781d7de6-3cf4-4c56-af27-60c548dd2806ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard04aThe Struggle for Food SovereigntybAlternative Development and the Renewal of Peasant Societies Today /cRemy Herrera, Kin Chi Lau. a97817837150531 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/781d7de6-3cf4-4c56-af27-60c548dd2806/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aHerrera, Remyeeditor.1 aLau, Kin Chieeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2015. a1 online resource (193 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThe world's food system is broken, and today's peasant societies are at a crossroads. This collection explores the multiplicity of problems faced by global family agricultures in the current neoliberal era. The contributors, including include Samir Amin, Joao Pedro Stedile and Utsa Patnaik, argue that an understanding of the revival of peasant struggles for their social emancipation and legitimate right of access to land is essential. Financialisation is undermining their work, and must be resisted if they are to construct a new, socially just food system. This is a response to the confusion surrounding how these urgent problems are understood, with the authors offering solutions as to how they should be resolved. They express the importance of the co-operation and cohesion of the various struggles taking place across Latin America, Africa, Asia, Oceania and Europe, and how they must share a common vision for the future. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6919 7aBusiness & Economics / Industries2bisacsh 7aBusiness & Economics / Development2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Developing & Emerging Countries2bisacsh 0aEconomics 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/781d7de6-3cf4-4c56-af27-60c548dd2806zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002725nam a22003977a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245009400153020001800247029010800265040002100373100003200394264003400426300003100460336002600491337002600517338003600543490003800579520113600617540001601753588004701769590003901816590004401855650001701899650003401916650006001950650000802010655002202018758013002040830003802170856011902208027be3de-69da-4ed8-9025-801d9ba174a7ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aWhen Protest Becomes CrimebPolitics and Law in Liberal Democracies /cCarolijn Terwindt. a97817868060791 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/027be3de-69da-4ed8-9025-801d9ba174a7/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aTerwindt, Carolijneauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bPluto Press,c2019. a1 online resource (305 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aAnthropology, Culture and Society aHow does protest become criminalised? Applying an anthropological perspective to political and legal conflicts, Carolijn Terwindt urges us to critically question the underlying interests and logic of prosecuting protesters. The book draws upon ethnographic research in Chile, Spain, and the United States to trace prosecutorial narratives in three protracted contentious episodes in liberal democracies. Terwindt examines the conflict between Chilean landowners and the indigenous Mapuche people, the Spanish state and the Basque independence movement, and the United States' criminalisation of 'eco-terrorists.' Exploring how patterns and mechanisms of prosecutorial narrative emerge through distinct political, social and democratic contexts, Terwindt shines a light on how prosecutorial narratives in each episode changed significantly over time. Challenging the law and justice system and warning against relying on criminal law to deal with socio-political conflicts, Terwindt's observations have implications for a wide range of actors and constituencies, including social movement activists, scholars, and prosecutors. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6924 7aLaw2bisacsh 7aLaw / Constitutional2bisacsh 7aLaw / Administrative Law & Regulatory Practice2bisacsh 0aLaw 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aAnthropology, Culture and Society40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/027be3de-69da-4ed8-9025-801d9ba174a7zView this content on BiblioBoard.7001582nam a22003497a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245003800153020001800191024004200209029010800251040002100359700002700380264003200407300003100439336002600470337002600496338003600522520024200558540001600800588004700816590003900863650004100902650001800943655002200961758013000983856011901113f21479ae-32a8-4cee-8b06-7f933a043f8bScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20152022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aDigital LiteraciescJulia Gillen. a97813158135308 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813158135301 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/f21479ae-32a8-4cee-8b06-7f933a043f8b/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aGillen, Juliaeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2015. a1 online resource (205 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aWith our increasing use of digital and online media, the way we interact with these modes has a great impact on our learning and literacy. By applying feminist poststructural and Foucauldian frameworks, the book examines the ongoing impact of broader socio-cultural discourse on the lives of gender and sexuality diverse students and teachers. Beginning with an overview of the impact of how a culture of limitation is realised in Australia, the focus moves beyond this context to examine state and federal policies from comparable societies in countries including the USA and the UK and their effect on the production of knowledges and what's permissible to include in educational curriculum. This research-driven book thus provides a comparative, international overview of the current state of gender and sexuality diversity in schools, and convincingly demonstrates that despite some empowerment of gender and sexuality diverse individuals, silencing and marginalization remain powerful forces. This book will be of great interest to graduate and postgraduate students, academics, professionals, and policy makers interested in the field of gender and sexuality in education. It is essential reading for those involved in pre-service and in-service teacher education, diversity education, the sociology of education, as well as education more generally. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aEducation2bisacsh 7aFiction / Romance / LGBTQ+ / Bisexual2bisacsh 7aReligion / Christian Living / Love & Marriage2bisacsh 7aFiction2lcgft 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aStudent and Teacher Experiences in Schools40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/de68d8f4-0374-4d0a-891c-e32b290a1cd3zView this content on BiblioBoard.7003204nam a22004457a 45000010037000000030008000370050017000450060019000620070015000810080041000960350022001370370016001592450119001750200018002940240042003120290108003540400021004627000030004837000034005132500010005472640032005573000031005893360026006203370026006463380036006724900065007085201341007735400016021145880047021305900039021775900044022166500057022606500045023176500040023626500020024026550022024227580130024448300065025748560119026391047bc10-5653-492d-a27b-710bd1e3f932ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192020xx o u00| u eng d a(OCoLC)1250411881 5BiblioBoard00aIntersectionality in Feminist and Queer MovementsbConfronting Privileges /cElizabeth Evans, Eléonore Lépinard. a97810007410258 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97804292898591 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/1047bc10-5653-492d-a27b-710bd1e3f932/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aEvans, Elizabetheeditor.1 aLépinard, Eléonoreeeditor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2019. a1 online resource (302 p.) atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aRoutledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality aExamining the ways in which feminist and queer activists confront privilege through the use of intersectionality, this edited collection presents empirical case studies from around the world to consider how intersectionality has been taken up (or indeed contested) by activists in order to expose and resist privilege. The volume sets out three key ways in which intersectionality operates within feminist and queer movements: it is used as a collective identity, as a strategy for forming coalitions, and as a repertoire for inclusivity. The case studies presented in this book then evaluate the extent to which some, or all, of these types of intersectional activism are used to confront manifestations of privilege. Drawing upon a wide range of cases from across time and space, this volume explores the difficulties with which activists often grapple when it comes to translating the desire for intersectionality into a praxis which confronts privilege. Addressing inter-related and politically relevant questions concerning how we apply and theorise intersectionality in our studies of feminist and queer movements, this timely edited collection will be of interest to students and scholars from across the social sciences and humanities with an interest in gender and feminism, LGBT+ and queer studies, and social movement studies. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 7234 7aSocial Science / Feminism & Feminist Theory2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Gender Studies2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Sociology2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a0 aRoutledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/1047bc10-5653-492d-a27b-710bd1e3f932zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002440nam a22003857a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245008000153020001800233024004200251029010800293040002100401700002400422700003300446264003700479300002300516336002600539337002600565338003600591520088600627540001601513588004701529590003901576590004401615650005801659650004601717650002001763655002201783758013001805856011901935cfaf881b-b7d7-4894-95f0-bf0499d1e958ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20132022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aScreening NaturebCinema Beyond the Human /cAnat Pick, Guinevere Narraway. a97818007329578 ahttps://doi.org/10.3167/97817823822631 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/cfaf881b-b7d7-4894-95f0-bf0499d1e958/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aPick, Anateeditor.1 aNarraway, Guinevereeeditor. 1a[s.l.] :bBerghahn Books,c2013. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aEnvironmentalism and ecology are areas of rapid growth in academia and society at large. Screening Nature is the first comprehensive work that groups together the wide range of concerns in the field of cinema and the environment, and what could be termed "posthuman cinema." It comprises key readings that highlight the centrality of nature and nonhuman animals to the cinematic medium, and to the language and institution of film. The book offers a fresh and timely intervention into contemporary film theory through a focus on the nonhuman environment as principal register in many filmic texts. Screening Nature offers an extensive resource for teachers, undergraduate students, and more advanced scholars on the intersections between the natural world and the worlds of film. It emphasizes the cross-cultural and geographically diverse relevance of the topic of cinema ecology. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books aBiblioBoard internal publisher id: 6686 7aPerforming Arts / Film / History & Criticism2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Popular Culture2bisacsh 0aPerforming arts 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/cfaf881b-b7d7-4894-95f0-bf0499d1e958zView this content on BiblioBoard.7002937nam a22003617a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245011900153020001800272029010800290040002100398100002900419264005000448300002300498336002600521337002600547338003600573520140800609540001602017588004702033590003902080650006302119650005302182650004902235650002002284655002202304758013002326856011902456bb603296-7f02-40a7-b0e6-3034023b66bfScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aHow "Indians" ThinkbColonial Indigenous Intellectuals and the Question of Critical Race Theory /cGonzalo Lamana. a97808165484461 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/bb603296-7f02-40a7-b0e6-3034023b66bf/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aLamana, Gonzaloeauthor. 1a[s.l.] :bUniversity of Arizona Press,c2019. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier aThe conquest and colonization of the Americas marked the beginning of a social, economic, and cultural change of global scale. Most of what we know about how colonial actors understood and theorized this complex historical transformation comes from Spanish sources. This makes the few texts penned by Indigenous intellectuals in colonial times so important: they allow us to see how some of those who inhabited the colonial world in a disadvantaged position thought and felt about it. This book shines light on Indigenous perspectives through a novel interpretation of the works of the two most important Amerindian intellectuals in the Andes, Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala and Garcilaso de la Vega, el Inca. Building on but also departing from the predominant scholarly position that views Indigenous-Spanish relations as the clash of two distinct cultures, Gonzalo Lamana argues that Guaman Poma and Garcilaso were the first Indigenous activist intellectuals and that they developed post-racial imaginaries four hundred years ago. Their texts not only highlighted Native peoples' achievements, denounced injustice, and demanded colonial reform, but they also exposed the emerging Spanish thinking and feeling on race that was at the core of colonial forms of discrimination. These authors aimed to alter the way colonial actors saw each other and, as a result, to change the world in which they lived. fCC BY-NC-ND0 aDescription based on print version record. aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books 7aSocial Science / Anthropology / Cultural & Social2bisacsh 7aHistory / Latin America / South America2bisacsh 7aSocial Science / Indigenous Studies2bisacsh 0aSocial sciences 0aElectronic books. iIs found in:aKU Select 2022: HSS Backlist Books1https://openresearchlibrary.org/module/8b834ea0-af86-4c54-bd7c-2b5a0883712a40uhttps://openresearchlibrary.org/content/bb603296-7f02-40a7-b0e6-3034023b66bfzView this content on BiblioBoard.7002317nam a22004097a 4500001003700000003000800037005001700045006001900062007001500081008004100096037001600137245007200153020001800225024004200243029010800285040002100393100003100414700003700445250001000482264003200492300002300524336002600547337002600573338003600599490004000635520070500675540001601380588004701396590003901443590004401482650003201526650003801558655002201596758013001618830004001748856011901788d10402f7-bee6-4431-8f40-44a0a6f45cd3ScCtBLL20230502175942.0m o d cr u||||||||||230502p20192022xx o u00| u eng d 5BiblioBoard00aLiterature and the WorldcStefan Helgesson, Mads Rosendahl Thomsen. a97813512036548 ahttps://doi.org/10.4324/97813512036781 ahttps://openresearchlibrary.org/ext/api/media/d10402f7-bee6-4431-8f40-44a0a6f45cd3/assets/thumbnail.jpg aScCtBLLcScCtBLL1 aHelgesson, Stefaneauthor.1 aThomsen, Mads Rosendahleauthor. a1 ed. 1a[s.l.] :bRoutledge,c2019. a1 online resource. atextbtxt2rdacontent acomputerbc2rdamedia aonline resourcebcr2rdacarrier1 aLiterature and Contemporary Thought aLiterature and the World presents a broad and multifaceted introduction to world literature and globalization.
